Yup. I installed an iPad in the car. It fits perfectly, and can be done wirelessly. Here is a crappy quality video:
So I put a couple of 2" long, rare earth magnets on either side of our display. They stick there by themselves, and then I put some adhesive magnet on the back of my iPad under the cover. It fits right in the space, and it stays there.
Then in the glovebox, I put a Blackberry Stereo Gateway I bought from AMazon for $49.
It plugs into the aux jack in the glovie. I put a USB lighter plug in the cig lighter in there and it powers it. Very small and takes no space. Connect the bluetooth from the iPad and Bobs your uncle! BTW this also works with your iPhone to just stream music. The Bberry and the car connect using two different BT profiles, so it will play music and then when the phone rings switch to the phone. It turns on and links automatically when you start your car.
I added to the storage capability with a Kensington Wi-Drive. 32gb that connects wirelessly to up to 3 iOs devices and streams audio or video. Its about the size of an iPod touch.
Anyways, sorry for the poor picture and video quality - I just shot it with my iPhone and I suck at that anyways. More of a concept guy.
Oh, and dont bother giving me crap about screen size and distraction and blah blah blah. Just having some fun.

But seriously, the magnets in the cover are very mild, and Apple does use a magnet with its own smart cover. The ones on the display are stronger, but its not like Im going to do it all the time. It was just a fun "wonder if........" kinda thing.BTW I just posted a slightly better vid instead.

Kudos to you Zephyr for taking to it with the sense of fun and farting around that it was originally done with. That is an awesome pic. Im a guy who's into cars and electronics, and I'm just playing around. Thats how ideas form and grow.
Im not suggesting this is a way to go. I am saying that on occasion its a way for my kids to see a bigger screen from the back seat when they are waiting for dad at yet another one of his appointments. There are no wires, and perhaps the photos don't show it but it doesnt really look ghetto at all when you are in the car. My kids think its a riot.
Oh, and the display stays up cos its on. Bluetooth sound thru the aux jack remember?

Now that's a nice mod. I do think that it's long overdue for a convergence of the carputer, tablet, and infotainment systems. Why should we pay thousands for a center-deck that will always sucked compare to the latest tablets? Just make the space for docking and have R&D work on the app!
