The only numbers about the car itself on my window sticker are the PO# and the VIN. No information about the motor. I'm pretty sure it's stamped in the block though.

How many of these failures have been reported ?

Hmmm, I'm looking at my window sticker and only see the VIN for the vehicle. No engine #.

Clearly, US and Canadian window stickers are not the same.
Is it true that the cams need to be removed to pull the heads ? If so that really sucks...Why not just replace one bolt at a time (reverse pattern) with the ARP fasteners ? I guess that might create bigger problems but who knows...

Yeah, the thought has crossed my mind also, just replace the ones that can be reached. Maybe that's the poor man's approach...do it in the first week after your factory warranty expires.

If in fact the engine range is correct for this flaw, I would press MB to do a preemptive repair even if I had to participate in the cost.

Cheaper than to fix it after it blows.

Why live in fear and not enjoy the car?!

The percentages between active members and failures is now making me uneasy. How much further did you drive?

Did you get the repair work done in Houston? If so, where? Was everything covered under warranty?

Any discussion on this subject matter over at the Private Lounge?

EDIT-I just placed a thread in the TECHNICAL sub-section.

Good deal, thx. This thread has gathered a little critical mass so perhaps those interested enough to have pushed this along so far can keep this thread alive as more information comes in.

It all started with a CEL. I took the car in and they changed the purge valve. Three days later CEL was back on. I got it in that day.

The work was done at Star MB in houston. I've had great service with them. I talked to the tech that did the work and he told me both rear bolts failed so they had to drill and tap them out. I didnt hear much after that I was shocked to say the least. The good thing is everything was covered under warranty.

No issues thus far.

That's a good reason to be proactive about this issue.

My MY2012 is way more than 10,000 units over #060658

Maybe someone with more info can tie this down to a build date range.

My engine # is on my window sticker as well. It is no where near the format listed above?

My engine number for MY2012 looks like this: 15698560071111

(the last 5 digits are not my real number) but in that range

You can look up your engine number by using EPCnet and running your data card. My number is lower than the one listed, so it looks like I may be affected. I will be contacting a few dealers to see if there is anything that can be done preemptively.

Found my engine # on a dealership service invoice. 15698560044XXX
Build date 12/1/2008, looks like my number is in that range. 34k no fail yet.

Thanks for the clue to look on the Dealer Repair Order.

Canadian Car Engine #:

1.) Window sticker - ENGINE NO. 12-600591

2.) Repair Order - ENG:156985600591XX

so it looks like my engine is before the affected up to # of 569xx60060658. I will have to keep an eye out as I hope to keep this car.

As you can see the window sticker uses a slightly different format and drops the last two digits that I XXed out in my engine # from my repair order.

Service Bulletin

Hi All,

I have a 2010 ML63 and 2010 C63, both of which are in the range. I subscribed to STAR TekInfo and found the service bulletin:

01-05-2012 Star Bulletins LI LI01.30-P-051567_Ver.1a
LI
(0bytes)
Check engine light (CEL) on and low coolant indicator lamp lights up
M156 up to engine # 569xx 60 060658

As you can see by the byte count, it's an empty document and returns an error when selected.

Perhaps someone can get the details and actions MB will take if one experiences the problem.

Regards,

Joe

So is it safe to assume late build 08s and throughout 09s are mainly affected?

My model year 2010s have engine numbers 53661 on the C63 (delivered 5/11/2009) and 59086 on the ML63 (delivered 10/05/2010). So based on that it would extend up well into MY2010 and maybe beyond. If someone can give me an early delivery US VIN for MY2011 I can look it up.

Regards,
