The early cam lobes are made of a softer material than the buckets and the cams wear the entire time the engine is tapping. The fix is to replace the M156 valve buckets with the M159 (SLS) buckets. Do the post-2011 engines have this fix?
From what I have heard, the factory warranty fix is replacing the headbolts and updated buckets.

After reading through several pages, I saw someone asked this same question but I didn't see if it was answered.

It seems all the warranty work was done through MB but has anyone had it done through a 3rd party warranty company?

I'm looking at a 2007 E63 with around 55k miles. I'd definitely buy an extended warranty of some type but I'd like to know if something like this issue would be covered if the worst happens.

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know roughly the labor cost to install Weistec bolts and valve buckets? I have a 2008 C63 out of warranty and reading all the stories are making me nervous.

I think I remember reading it cost someone $5k altogether. If you get the bolts from Weistec, I think they were like $1300, so the rest would be labor. I don't think that included buckets.

if you do the buckets/tappets with head bolts ~4k (plus or minus depending on shop)

If you do just the head bolts and gaskets just over 2k

This is assuming OEM head bolts, not ARP studs

That's also the preventative cost. After the fact, I think one guy had to shell out $25k, the dealer split half.

An update: statepkt is sending me some faulty head bolts. motoman and I in our own separate ways intend to bring some real information to the issue of "why" via "real-science lab testing." We're going about it in different ways so the results will be out there at different times but they'll be coming. We need more corroded head bolts from different M156 engines though, so any of you who have them around and can part with them, well please PM me or motoman...much appreciated.

I have noted some lack of cross pollination among the sub forums and have visited the using M156 engine sub-forum sites and asked for any failed AMG 6.3 engine headbolts. Labs have asked me for samples and pictures and there are not enough to go around. Please help before AMG escapes via all- turbo engine design and shines on the bad headbolts as routine maintenance.

No problem. I hope that my head bolts can provide some leads on why this is happening and maybe help people get MB to take action

Very interesting shot of statpkt broken bolt. Severe pitting looks like water soaked, not crevice corrosion. Perhaps "soaking" is due to age of car, 2007? Water or depleted coolant driven by system pressure past the "unsealed" threads in the bloc. We are close, I hope, to professional analylsis.

I'm certain I'll need one more broken bolt for the testing/analysis that I plan on having done. Hopefully it'll materialize.

I completed the requests for broken M156 headbolts within ML63, R63, S63,CL63,CLK63, and SL63 sub forums. What's with E63 and CLS63...says they moved so I did not post there. The E63 , especially , is needed.

I can see, as bhamg has, that availability of failed bolts will slow this study . In my case I am requesting quotes, and based upon potential tests the labs may need several. Sniff 'em out and send 'em please.
