M156 head bolt problems
You have beed driving it for 3 months adding 2 gal/week with no issue...what did you tell them that made them so eager to get the car and made them tell you not to drive it and have it towed?
Seems like the damage has been done

Thank you for the info Joe.

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
Removed the head?

Are you selling because you're angry at MB? You're fixing pretty much the one thing that concerns us owners about the vehicle. Why sell it now?
I'm keeping mine and if it has to be repaired I'll try to get MB help, otherwise I'll fix and move on.
Regards,
Joe
Yes I'm selling it because I'm pissed. I was going to go to an amg sedan anyway but will just look at something else all together.

I didn't ask about what they meant by the pistons being too big. I just made it clear I wasn't too happy especially if MB knew this was a defect so they just said it was a "very slim" possibility and that they would see what they could do so now I'm waiting for a final verdict.
First off, I'm new here. I've had my baby for about a year now. She's a 2009 C63. I bought her used at 46K mi. and, apparently, I'm the third owner. She is now shy of 52K.
2K miles of bliss then I smelt coolant. I took her to a third party Mercedes shop (Burback Motors) and they confirmed that I had a problem and that, since they don't have the tools, that I need to take it to the local dealership, MB of Portland.
I don't have a problem with naming either shop. Burback is a straight-up honest, family run shop and I appreciate their professionalism. So I limped my baby across the river to the dealership service dept. and into Charles Haga’s (Chuck) service.
Yep, Chuck confirmed that I had a leak from the head cover and the bolts are bad. Bad news, though. My car is out of warranty by time. ****! I need the car back so I agree to go ahead with repairs. The cost came out to about $4200 (might have been a bit inflated by the dealership). However, Chuck advocated for me and I was given the offer of paying only half and the dealer would pay the other half. Hells yeah!

I decided that since the heads were off that they be sent to the machinist for a once over. This is not part of the work order that MB has done to correct the head bolt issue. I did this on my own dime at the estimate of $1K. They found that the valve guides were worn, so we replaced them. Final cost was still $1K.
Three weeks later and I have my baby back on the road. 200 miles later, as I’m passing a semi truck on my way to work, the car loses power, sounds awful and all sorts of lights flash on the dash. Oh, ****! My baby is dead on the side of the road (semi truck blowing his horn at me as he passes, HAH!) Back into the shop and Chuck and I are stumped.
They find that the valves have struck a few piston heads and cracked one. The engine and heads are sent to the machine shop for further inspection and to figure out the cause. Days go into weeks and finally the MB rep is available to look at the engine and heads. There is lots of back and forth. Weeks of it. But the final verdict is that the lifters got stuck somehow and caused the problem. And since MB of Portland warrants all of their work (thankfully I had that head work done) they bought me a new engine for my baby.

Even though I had my car in the shop for about 3 months and had an engine destroying event, I still have full confidence in MB of Portland service’s dept. and management to do right by their customers. Many thanks to Chuck and his service crew.
Almost 4K miles since the new engine and no problems. I love this car and engine!
