Extended warranty from dealership???

How many of you, when buying new, have purchased extended warranty from the dealership at time of delivery?
My MB dealer in Oakville has offered $4300 for a 6yr/160k extended warranty and $4800 for a 7r/$160k.

Is it more of a hassle to go with an outside company like ensureall?
Is it worth the cost savings?

Opinions???

Depends how long you're planning to keep the car.

If I were you, I'll wait few months before my original warranty expires and then get an extended one. From what I heard, you don't really get a better deal when your purchase the warranty with the car. It makes more sense to wait and then buy it when it's time. You never know what will happen in 4 years Of course, that's my opinion.

if you get the car at time of delivery, you dont have to pay for them to do the certified inspection later on before they will sell you the ELW. But that inspection is just a couple hundred bucks so not too big of a deal.

BTW the price they quoted you seems kinda high. Is that inc taxes? I think my additional 3 year was just a bit over 3k. IMO the MB warranty is good. less hassle and stress relief. I am planning on driving my car for a while as well so I bought it.

I paid $3299 for a total 7yr/75k miles. I believe I can cancel the extended warranty any time and get a prorated refund as well.

That seems about right for what I paid too. it was a bit less than 3k for 2yr and about there for the additional year

The original price the finance manager quoted me for my extended warranty was $3499. Right off the bat she knocked off $200 for me so I took the offer. Then she keeps explaining about the prorated refund and I brought up the scenario about canceling before the 4yr/50k was up and she mentioned that in that case I would receive a full refund.

Yeah, it seemed kind of high to me. Price does not include HST!!! They said they have a couple hundred bucks wiggle room.

Biglee: you mentioned 7 yr/75K? does this mean 75k over the original 80k warranty.

Fung: which dealer did you buy your warranty with? Can you buy this kind of thing from any dealer?

I wasn't eligible for MB ELW for whatever reason either.. I've had a few dealerships tell me they can do it and the other dealers were noobs basically, but still no go. I ended up having to go third party.

Just curious: Was your car "punched" by the dealer to take advantage of trunk money? In that case, the warranty would have started before you bought your car even if it was never previously registered. Wonder if that changes eligibility for an extended warranty.

When I purchased the car it was used, it had 700 miles or something on it. It wasn't sold as "new" or "preowned" or CPO even, I don't know remember what it is sold as (I assumed new or "basically new" if there is such a thing), and when I asked about it, neither did the dealer I bought it from. First they told me it was a paperwork error, and after my SA looked into it a little further for me he told me that the previous owner had a purchased a whole mess of AMG cars and MBUSA helped "get him out of this one and into another one", whatever that means. I took it as MBUSA was like screw this car, who cares. Unfortunately I care !!! lol.. I still had the remainder of the original warranty, but after that MB didn't want anything to do with it..

I wish the dealership told me about this before, I would've got a brand spanking new one had I known this, but whatever. I ended up getting a good deal on a 3rd party anyway so I'm happy.

I bought a cpo 09 recently with some of the original factory warranty remaining. It came with the additional 1 year of CPO. Plus i bought 2 more years on top of that for about $4000. I was told it was not negotiable. Car is covered til 135k miles.

It's definitely negotiable. I've had dealers tell me that they MBUSA dictates the price but I don't think that's true. I was offered extended warranties through MB dealers differing in price as much as $1500+ easy, and when I spoke to MBUSA about my eligibility they told me that the extended warranty is handled on the dealer level, and they (MBUSA) have nothing to do with eligibility and/or pricing. Not sure who to believe, just sharing my experience.

Who knows, maybe once you negotiate the price of the vehicle down to a certain dollar amount they tell you the warranty is not negotiable. I guess they gotta make the $$ somewhere.

That's exactly what it is...I feel like because I got a nice discount on the car they're not budging on extras. My friend at MB Toronto says they mark up the price of ELWs in Canada by $400, but that doesn't seem to be the case if Fung got the same warranty for $1k less than what I was offered.

Ok I think I figured out why there is a price discrepancy. The prices you guys are quoted are the standard prices. Because my car is CPO so it was inspected prior to sale, I got a discount. I have a soft copy of a brochure here (i can send it you guys via email if you want) for a MB CPO owner that clearly states I qualify for a reduction in ELW prices.

my 2yr quote was about 2950 and 3yr (which I went for) is about 3,350.

To be honest, I dont know if you guys can get qualified for it? Might be worth a question to your local dealer.

FWIW, my dealer is MB Newmarket. Although I'm not sure if it will make a difference in terms of qualifying for a discount, I can do an introduction for you guys if you like.

@Roswell, I have no clue if you can have a local dealer inspect it or not. your car is practically brand new lol 5,100 kms! I put almost 4k on my car last month

btw, I remember asking them if I bought ELW later what are the implications. She told me that I would need to get re-inspected before I can purchase ELW.

Only the dealer can offer you a factory extended warranty. If you read the fine print to understand what is covered and what is not, I don't think you can get a better third party warranty (which is actually an insurance policy with a deductable). Considering the cost to fix anything even minor on these cars, the extended warranty is not a bad choice. I had the extended factory warranty on my C55 and when the drive shaft let go (taking the most of the tranny and rear differential with it) I was very glad I paid for it. THe other advantage is you can sell the car before the warranty expires and buyers will be more inclined to buy a used car with some factory warranty still on it.

Thnx for the reply Fung, your scenario makes sense. I guess it's easier to deal with the price of extended warranty at time of purchase. I will most likely end up buying it before my warranty expired as my car has low km & I'm afraid big repairs will arise after the 4 years.
