Question Exhaust Drone

I have MBH Tri-Y LT headers on my 2012 C63 flowing into MBH catted mids and Akropovic exhaust. I love the sound when I get on the accelerator, but I’m getting a lot of low RPM drone (1500 to 2500 RPM) which is irritating around town and at freeway speed. I’m wondering if installing an X-Pipe would solve the problem.

Alternatively, I'm considering reinstalling the stock resonator, but it’s heavy and provides a slightly smaller diameter (2.5” vs the 2.75” Akropovic) exhaust path.

Anyone have experience with either of these options?

I would look into something called a branch resonator. I've heard they help drone, but have no experience with them.

my guess would be the akropovic install is causing the drone... i haven't heard about other people with slip-ons with drone problems...

i've got the mbh headers with catless mids, stock muffs and stock res... no drone...

Probably the resonator delete that's causing the drone.

That's interesting cause several people here, like Pertplus, has the same setup and didn't say anything about drone. You should check with ACG, they have a connecting pipe to your Akrapovic slip-ons and they are also located in San Diego.

remove the cats and get yourself an xpipe. Problem will be solved!

tak out the cats and go 3 inch all the way.

The problem that you are having was the same problem my bro had in his SLS. Air is being blocked and the engine wants to breathe freely.

I have a strong feeling its your Akrapovic slip on.
Replace the slip ons with your OEM mufflers and you'll have much less drone.

I ran with MBH headers, catless mids, stock mufflers and stock resonator and didn't have a drone problem, but the car was incredibly loud at start up and under acceleration. Akropovic exhaust removed the raspyness and gave it a much richer tuned note, but introduced the low RPM drone. Just added the MBH catted mids today to see if it alleviated my concern and it helped a little, but still too loud for my 54 yr old daily driver taste.

Thanks BO Knows. ACG does a nice job - they've done all the work on my car and I'm running their connecting pipe to the Akropovic exhaust. I'm probably just too picky.

Try an H pipe rather than an X pipe. X pipe kills the AMG note too much. Worked for me with my Cargraphic headers

Had ACG reinstall the stock resonator and the drone is much improved. Final configuration - Euro Airbox, MBH Tri-Y Long Tube Headers, MBH sport cats, stock resonator & Akropovik Exhaust. Better than stock sound and about 50 HP at the crank (40 @ wheels) and 43 ft lb of torque.

X pipe will clean that tone up a lot. It will kill the raspyness and even the exhaust note out.

It will also give you a slight performance boost.

Headers, no cats, X pipe and stock mufflers sounds wonderful. I have ppl rolling down their windows every second day.
