I did some searching and came up empty.

Has anyone else had this issue? Pic is a little blury but you get the idea. Yes that's rust

That looks bad.. Sorry to hear. Our paint is a little soft & very prone to rock chips.

Good luck trying to get it fixed under warranty. The stealer will blame ur license plate.

That they installed. The plate is actually not touching the surface so I'm not sure how it happened. I'm just curious if it's common.

At least it's in an secluded location.

Sorry about that. Take it to the dealer and hopefully it will be covered under warranty.

Most likely from slamming the boot hard, Your best bet is putting fish oil on it and retightening the plate a little lower with some double sided tape to stop moisture.

Or alternatively you could buy a Dads C63 carbon fibre boot lid.

I tried pushing it down with my thumb and can't even come close to making contact so I'm fairly confident it wasn't the plate.

The only thing I can think of is if something lodged itself in behind the plate, rubbed for a while then eventually fell out. Possibly some ice in the winter.

Possible design flaw?

I much prefer MB's soft paint to Audi/VW's rock hard crap. Compounding out scratches literally takes days

ok hold on.

Take the plate off, clean the area well, and take another picture.

Such a bad design. The bracket that mounts to the 4 studs doesn't hold the plate out far enough. There's even 3 spots where the plate screws touch the surface of the trunk lid.

I noticed mine doing the exact same thing a while back. Terrible design! Let us know what the dealer says about repairing it! Good luck...I'm sure you'll need it!
