My 2011 C63 depreciated 42% in 1 year
So yesterday I went to check out the new SL550 and test drove it. The car is extremely comfortable and luxurious inside. I quickly planned to trade in the C63 for it because it was just an addictive car and I originally wanted to move on to a comfortable & luxury ride for my fiance.
My 2011 C63 is exactly 1 year old with MSRP $81k, I was sure the car would only depreciated to around 55k. But to my surprise the dealer calculated everything and told me its only worth 46.5k!
It's quite sad the car depreciated almost by half and certainly not worth switching car yet. Guess I should wait another year.

That's trade in value. They would turn around and try to sell it for $54K probably.
Private sale you could probably get something close to that (assuming low mileage).

Yea my car is only 16k KM on it, I was hoping to get 54k assuming they were going to put in back in the market for 59k

I'm not sure how the Canadian market compares to the US, but there is no way a heavily optioned '11 P31 car with an MSRP of $81k is only worth $46.5k! You are getting a very bad trade in valuation for a car with only 10k miles. Has the car been in any accidents?
In the US, a clean single owner 2011 P31 car in with 10k miles would sell for $55-58k. Either the dealer is trying to make a $10k profit on your car, or something is wrong with it.

You should be close to 50K for the trade in my opinion. Yes, you can probably get 55K on a private sale. Not sure where you are from but normally a tax savings cancels that out.
Look at it this way....
110K SL550 = $9487 in tax in NY
Trade for $50K
You now only have to pay tax on $60K
60K = $5175
----------------------------------
Difference of $4312
So even if you held off and privately sold it for $54,312 you would be in the same boat as if you traded it for $50K.
This is why I almost always trade rather than private sell if I am getting into something else. So much less hassle.

Sell it privately and you should be getting that
I just looked into the blackbook for the trade in value. it is totally worth more.

They don't tax on selling price in NY? No matter how much value your trade in is here in CA, you still pay tax on the selling price, not final amount owed and/or finance total.

But somehow, they have managed to spare car leasing. In Illinois and a few other states, you pay sales tax on the entire price of the car upfront even if you lease it!

There is also a use tax if you buy from out of state even if that state doesn't require a sales tax. The use tax basically amounts to a sales tax even though sales tax was already paid (doesn't matter how many times the car has changed hands).

They are obviously sensing that the SL is an impulse buy and are trying to soak you.
For reference, i was offered $47k for my 09 P30 with 58000 kms when i was looking to get a CLS63
Go to another dealer and work the deal on the SL first. Get the price on the SL where you want it to be and dont mention a trade. Once you get the SL price to a nice spot, you can then introduce the trade
You have to do the deal in that sequence otherwise you wont know your total savings and more true value of your trade
Since your car is an 11, its actually 2 model years old with the 2013's hitting the road now
Take your time and work the dealerships in your area

50K to 51K for your vehicle on trade in is a more realistic number imo.

Sorry but your 2011 is a two year old car, not one year old.
Just because you bought it a year ago doesn't matter.
I have one of the first 2011s and it will be 2 years old in a week. That's why I always laugh when people buy late in the model year or buy leftovers and they think they save a little up front. I always try to buy as early in the model year as possible, so I get to use the car for the longest period for that year.
When the time comes to trade in, the dealers go by model year, whether it was one of the first or last cars made for that model year doesn't matter. Always factor this in when you buy a car, it can save you thousands of dollars later. My car is worth the same as yours, but I've enjoyed mine for twice as long! Either way, trading in after such a short time is not easy on the wallet.
I just test drove the new Sl550 and I couldn't have a disagree more vs the C63. I thought it was very wimpy and artificial feeling in every way. It's a nice looking car and sounds like what you want, but man it drives very different than our C63s. Each their own and obviously just my opinion
BTW, don't let the dealer fleece you, there's better deals out there!
