LSD Service

Ok quick question the sticker on the window says to replace this diff. Fluid at the first 1870 miles while other people change it at there first 1,000 miles. Why are people changing it early and some people are saying its free service can anyone clear this up?? The tech at MB said its a thicker fluid when it is delivered and helps settle in the gears or some thing.

Question

Yes, you have to change the LSD oil as you have quoted...in Australia it's 3000Ks....and you have to pay. The "confusion" is that the 1st "Service" (or rather "inspection"), is free.....but the LSD oil change is not.
Don't know anything about the "original" oil being thicker...never heard that one before....the reason you have to change the oil is that the initial "running in/wearing in" stage, of the clutches in the LSD may cause a little metal to be present in the oil, hense the need to change it.
Cheers, Pickles.

change at 1870 per your original sticker as long as you have the p/p lsd. and free if you have the maintenance package otherwise it runs around a buck seventy. I would call ahead as they may need to order the gold bottled fluid in

I presume this is the same on the C63 BS, despite being a higher locking %, etc.?

I haven't been able to find the BS specific owners manual and/or maintenance guide online, so I'm going off what I know from memory and/or the standard C-class manuals.

He says that the original fluid is thicker and that's why when I went there to service it at 1,000 miles he said No. He said the LSD needed more miles on it to so the gears would wear in. Honestly I just wanted to make sure that I am getting everything cleared up. But I apperciate everyone's response thank you guys. Everyone on this boards been great hell I found my car on this board there was a whole thread about it LoL.

Sorry to Hijack the thread, I didnt feel like making a new one for my simple question.

How often should I be replacing the Diff fluid after the initial 3000km flush?

Service Booklet says - Service 6 - at every 60,000KM or 2 Years - Replace rear axle differential fluid.

Good question....., because I face the same issue. The book says you don't have to change it again until 50,000ks, but I will be changing mine again at the first A service (12ms). The car will only have travelled about 17000ks, but I'm going to change it anyway.
Cheers, Pickles.

The fluid in the LSD after 2k miles will come out looking like grey metallic paint. There must be a break in additive.

After the next 80k miles, mine came out like simply a slightly burnt clear oil. No particulates. Going in, it is the color of vegetable oil.

My E63 had no further change interval, but I will be using 40k, or every2yrs.
