FACTORY LSD OPTION
Is there a way of finding out whether a car came from the factory with the LSD option such as vin code identification? Obviously can go for a drive and shred some rubber but is there a smarter way?

Is there any difference in the differential cover that might help identify a LSD? I've done a pretty thorough search without much luck - calling the dealer seems to be best solutuion so far - but found one post which implied that the LSD rear cover had a better cooling fin arrangement . . . .
Any truth to that?

There is a cooling fin option on some diffs but mine for example does not have it while I do have the factory LSD. I don't know of any external way of telling if the factory LSD is installed. If you get the build sheet from a dealer it will be listed as option code 471.

Is that right?! I thought OE LSD's all came with the bolt-on cooling fin. Mine has it and it's surprising large - you can't miss it when you look at the diff. I remember talking to the tech while I was getting the early fluid change and he said that was the way to tell them apart. If it were my car I'd be making sure that a) my car wasn't one of those partial P30/P31 packages that MB shipped out without the LSD and b) MB installed the cooling fin gratis. After all, you paid for it.

What you say about the cooling fins on the diff may apply to the '09s with P30 and maybe some early '10s (up to Mid Dec '09 build dates) (full package) but not to any cars after that AFAIK. I have the P31 and in the '10s it did not include the LSD as I had to order it as a separate option and no cooling fins.

Put the diff up on jack stands and rotate one wheel by hand with the car in gear. If the other wheel turns backwards then there is no working limited slip unit inside. If the other wheel does not turn when the car is in gear but turns in the same direction when out of gear then there is certainly a limited slip unit in there. Especially if you cannot turn them in different directions by hand
