What is this white stuff?
Hey guys!
I popped out my hood yesterday to add some oil and a bad surprise was waiting for me... there is white stuff all over the engine. Car is running strong.
Here are some pics:
Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks

Black car and I drive 100-150 miles a day. It gets washed in a tunnel automated car wash that actually protects the paint. I have a membership with them. I noticed that I when I have my car hand washed, there is always swirls so I'd rather do it through the machine (the one where you put your car on a rail and it makes your car move). It only takes 3 min and the car looks flawless.
I haven't done anything differently. I'm gonna have it cleaned today but I just wanted to avoid this happening in the future.

as for the original question, i would wipe it down.. and monitor it, if it doesn't come back than you should be ok. from what i gather with the people that had the coolant issue, it is continuous once it starts

If you didn't do anything different, then you might have driven through something, like a puddle. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you had a lot of ocean spray or salty rain. Gotta keep the metal from corroding/rusting. Otherwise, just wipe it down.

I use wand-type car washes regularly and only the spot-free rinse cycle, It's always a low pressure flow, so find one, spray your engine compartment and dry it off with a towel. You won't need to cover your electronics, just don't subject them to a flood. Been doing this for years, never ever had a problem.

if you haven't been getting water in there, then it may be your coolant spraying all over the engine bay ... i had a hairline crack in my C43 reservoir tank and this is what it looked like (white deposits).

Its hard water stains. I have them all over my car. As the water where I live is full of minerals. If I dont dry my car fast enough or if I try and wash it when the engine is hot, I get these deposits on the paint surface. You can try some white vinegar on a towel and just wipe it off if it bothers you.

It's clearly directional spatter that all point to one source. The larger drops are from spatter that hit the hood, gathered, then dropped. Now don't hijack the thread and guess what I do for a living...
Do the directional drips all point back to the grill? ...and are the directional drips all mostly concentrated on the right side and at a high level?

you should tell that car wash company to update to a railess system. Rails can give you curb rash
