Saw that on the PL. We should use this as an opportunity to contact our Senators and Congressmen about the harms and uselessness of ethanol. There is no benefit except to lobbyists and corn farmers.

I've been running E85 in my Evo for years now and it's only a 2005.

MB cannot void the warranty no matter what they say, if all pumps in the US moved to E15 (edit: originally said E85, meant to say E15) there is no other option, they cannot arbitrarily void the warranty. That of course is a long way off, so hopefully the issue won't happen anytime soon.

Sure they can. It says specifically in the manual, under Fuel requirements, that Ethanol can not exceed 10%. If you don't follow the manual, you void your warranty.

Ran it on my 2005 Evo for about 100,000 miles. Love the stuff.

My Honda race car which is a 1994 also runs on E85 full time.

Like others have said, super cheap race fuel.

...and your fuel system is compatible.

Some are incompatible with high levels of ethanol.

That's precisely the argument in the article. They don't really mention any engine concerns. It's the fuel lines, seals, etc that can be damaged.

I have yet to see a real world example of Ethanol damaging fuel lines. People are selling wolf tickets.

My experience with it is some batches created a black tar like substance at the injector tip that was easily cleaned off. Even my 1994 Honda fuel system handles it (albeit with upgraded pump and injectors to keep up with fueling demands). And it sits up to 6 months at a time.

There are a bunch of cases where ethanol is expanding the composite gas tanks of Ducatis.

On a side note, in my 07 Audi manual it states:

"The use of E15 or higher will damage the engine and is not covered under warrenty"

Just saying

Just talk to boat owners.. there is a reason why Marinas sell 100% gasoline, no Ethanol at all..

Ethanol is Hygroscopic, it attracts and holds onto moisture, which is far more prevalent on coastal and lake regions, and can cause major damage to engines. Obviously, cars are less likely to have moisture in the fuel lines, but its not impossible.

Seals in general, unless silicon based, get destroyed by Ethanol. Alcohol turns plastics and rubber brittle. That is the primary problem.

Correct but see below. Ive seen this black substance build up in intake manifolds in FDs. I wont go E85. Try cleaning those same injector tips on a Rotary, Supra or hell even a MR2 turbo. I wouldnt look forward to that kind of maintenace

Exactly. The naysayers have 0 personal experience with the stuff. It has always been that way.

I think it's been shown that all up ethanol is not cost effective, only lobby effective.

NOW HEAR THIS, NOW HEAR THIS... a few years back the EPA gwarranteed the no manufacturer could sell equipment susceptible to ethanol fuel degradation. (not a joke).

In a parallel universe my tractor friends have told me that townships of 5K and lower can still sell ethanol free fuel. and that an online ( I think) listing is available. I have not pursued. Repair facilities still report swollen viton carb parts and heavy deposit which clog fuel systems, but that may be on
?pre 98? stuff.

A gallon of ethanol gas can absorb about 4 teaspoons of water. Beyond that the water and some ethanol ride along with the mixed fuel as fellow travellers which the EPA admits can affect idle. See Wikepedia for more reading pleasure.

Yeah, a massive special interests ripoff. Isn't the true cost of a gallon of ethanol (i.e., total direct and indirect costs) something around $8.00/gallon?
