"Enough straight line speed to beat a Cayenne Turbo or M3 in a straight line with a simple tune. Let's face it - for 99% of people, the most important type of speed is straight line on the road - be it stoplight to stoplight or passing/merging on the highway. The X1 is actually better suited for this kind of driving than even the M3 due to the torque."
... can someone please explain to me how this is possible!? I have yet to be taken off the line by an X1 ... but now Im scared LOL

my wife bananas! :D
but what you are saying is true... and it is often overlooked. Driver skill has alot to do with everything.. from corners, the shifting to reaching the potential of any car.
i have a feeling the op in the bmw thread beat a couple of M3s... M3s that didnt know they were racing I think I've lost a few of those myself lolz

It comes down to the torque the X1 or any N55 owner "feels". That's why they "think" it's faster than S65 based M3. It's an interesting test... take someone for a ride in an M3 and a lightly modified N54/N55 and they will tell you that the N54/N55 car "IS" faster... but in reality, it's the over 400 ft lb of torque of the modified N54/N55 they feel. On the other hand however, torque is what makes a car FUN to drive at streets speed. Hence why our C63s are so much fun (In our case, we happen to have the up top power as well where N54/N55 just fall off the cliff at 5000RPM).
I used to have a 335i with N54 and another 335i with N55 and an M3 DCT. None of those in stock form could keep up with my E92 DCT M3 in higher speeds however, they felt faster down low due to more torque on tap. The M3's peak torque was around 3500RPM where peak torque on stock N55 was around 1400 and for N54 around 1800-1900RPM.

You are so right about the instant torque and low end throttle response being very misleading with those motors.
Debated getting an X1 recently. The 35i feels great...it's a quick little car, no doubt about it. With a tune and some pipes I'm sure it's a little utilitarian rocket. But to boast about how fast it is as if it's some kind of race car (which this particular guy has done before in other threads on that site) is lame.

Lol...have to say I'm shocked some people actually felt the need to cross post my thread not only to the m3 forums, but to the Mercedes forums! But that's fine with me, especially now that I've humiliated plenty of m3s and amgs both on the drag strip and at the mid Ohio road course. If you are ever in Cincinnati let me know and I'll buy you dinner and we can hit the drag strip. But you'd better be modded if you don't want to wind up on YouTube losing to an x1 because I believe my timeslip is faster than the fastest stock c63. Of course, all you modded c63s are much faster than the m3 posers so perhaps you all won't be as scared to race my soccer mom mobile. Timeslot attached.

I'm pretty sure I've seen stock cars easily in the 11s as well.
I'm not too far away from Cincinnati . . .

My point wasn't to compare the x1 to the an amg, let's be real. Just having a bit of fun at the expense of the op, who thought he was having a bit of fun at my expense. Yes indeed, my x1 is significantly faster than m3s, including bolt on ones unless they are on drag radials. It's just icing on the cake that it's faster than many of the timeslips posted in this very forum.

Paradoxical3 - Don't take this as trying to butt heads, just an honest question.
I came from a 135i, jb4 g5 board, catless downpipes, and e85. So, I believe that is pretty similar to your x1 as far as mods are concerned, yes? Yet I believe the x1 weighs quite a bit more but you still think it is faster than the 135i in a straight line? I'll go with you that it could be close but I just don't see my 135i losing to an x1 especially where it was at. Not to mention I think the n54's are a little bit faster than n55's. I had an n54 for what it's worth.

Ah ok, that makes much more sense now. Then yea I can get on board with that idea because the jb4 just adds stupid amounts of power.
Nice to see an x1 enthusiast standing up for the car out there. I think it is a great platform but the rear end makes me cringe a little bit. However, that just comes down to personal taste. I'm sure it's a blast to drive!
