Tinted tail lights in California

Any members in CA (or someone you know of in CA) get busted for having tinted tail lights, either the whole thing or just the white reverse light lens?

Yes I have gotten tickets in all the cars I tinted the taillights, it will happen eventually depending on how much freeway driving you do. As i have come to find only CHP and meter maids give fix it tickets. It is like a no front plate ticket. Never happened for just the reverse light tint. You should be in the clear with that. My first car was a GMC Yukon had the taillights professionally tinted took 3 years to get a fix it ticket. My old mercedes c coupe took a little over a year but that time I did them myself using VHT night shade. My Cayenne was similar. I learned my lesson on my old w211 e350 I tinted the reverse light only using a film never had any issues. Did the same on my current c63. Easy off and on just in case with the film.

One solution would be to buy an extra set of taillights and if you get a ticket throw the others on get it signed and pay the $25

Or you could just be buddies with a LEO and fix nothing

I lightly tinted my RS4 lights - never got busted, but they were not dark at all. I took them off eventually - I didn't like the look.

Los Alamitos/Cypress/Rossmoor PD will do it too if you're from that area. They gave me a ticket for my tint on my front doors when it's legal to have 70%

Installing any level of tint on your driver/passenger window or windshield is illegal in CA. All that is a allowed is a perfectly clear "UV shield".

I try to avoid doing anything that will get me pulled over, the popo's are looking for any reason to do so.

I've been popped 3 times for tinted windows, among other fix-it BS, and I refuse to get them undone. I'm rocking about 20% all around, I think.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it require two or more things that you have to fix in order for LEOs to give you a fix-it ticket?

sounds like a light tint of the reverse light lens only won't upset the cops. i've been dragging on doing it also bc i am not sure about the look either. my old C43 had lightly tinted tail lights from the factory, so i am wondering if just tinting the white part will look weird. anyway, thanks for all the input guys.

I've got tinted windows and no front license plate. I dare not tempt fate with tinted tail light. Besides if you get hit in the rear, and the other driver claims he did not see your brake lights due to the tint, you might have a really bad time with an insurance claim.

CHP really don't seem to care down here. But some of the county and smaller town local sheriffs will tag you. There are no meter maids to worry about.

Funny, I got tagged once by Daly City PD and twice by CHP up here. One time, a meter maid got me for no front plate because it was a part of SF where you had to back into the spots.
