2008 C63 Lifter Issues

This weekend my engine started clicking loudly.

After some investigation on the forums, It sounds like I could have the lifter issue that's common in these engines.

I took C63 to the dealer immediately. After sharing the video I took over the weekend, (you-tube link below,) the service department also thinks there is a lifter issue. Although, for some reason the shop can't yet reproduce the sound. They're hoping to reproduce the sound to help isolate the issue more exactly.

I've got an extended CPO, so it's covered under warranty.

Does anyone have any experience in this area? What can I expect, how long to order parts, time to repair? Should the lifters and camshafts be replaced with a new set of parts automatically?

Thanks!

Lifter might be stuck. Did it go away?

Makes my Cummins seem quiet in comparison lol. I'd say sticky lifter too. Not end of world, but definitely a pita.

I'd guess most dealers would tell you it's normal.

My 2008 has done that twice it was a stuck lifter after the car sat for a few weeks. I switch to 5W40 this oil change.

Let it warm up slowly... take it for a drive around the block.

The lifters have been replaced by new lifters from the SLS63 motor. While MBZ will not admit to anything, the original designed lifters cause premature cam wear. If you also experience the head bolt failure, the new style lifters will also be installed.

Here's an update:
The service department still has not been able to replicate the sound in my video. However they have been talking to MB engineers. Apparently one of the engineers says there is no problem, another feels something should be repaired. So, I'll wait for another update tomorrow.

If you can get them to commit to change the lifters see if you can talk them into doing the headbolt retrofit. Pulling the cams most of the work.

I just got the car back a couple days ago.

The service shop replaced the following:
32 (156-050-02-25) valve tappets, 1 (156-050-36-47) camshaft adj.

Everything sounds great, seems back to normal.

I just experienced this problem myself when I went to pick the car up. Same exact sound. They are telling me to replace all 4 camshafts, all 32 lifters for a bargain price of 9k.

See other thread. https://mbworld.org/forums/w219/5269...ealership.html

It's been very cold the last few weeks, and I haven't driven the car much, it's been sitting in the cold. When they gave me back the car it sounded like this. I didn't hand it over sounding like this.

You guys say this possibly will fix itself? I was told if I don't fix it, it will result in complete engine failure.

Advice?

Usually it fixes itself once the engine gets warm.
Why was your car brought in the dealership? Was the ticking sound there before dropping it?
I guess you are out of extended warranty.

edit: just read the thread. So how come a car coming in for springs gets returned with engine issue? You should have told them something happened while the car was with them.

Nothing is wrong with the car, tell those guys to go and f themselves. Its completly normal and it will go aways after you drive the car. The lifters need to pump up. when the car is sitting for long periods of time it will do that. I cant belive they told you to repace all those parts with nothing being wrong...

They pulled the valve covers off, sent me photos of the cam lobe wear etc. Not that is have any idea what a good or bad cam lobe wear looks like.

I asked them the same thing. How does it get dropped off for springs, and come back with near catastrophic engine failure, according to them.

Waiting to hear back from them.

Changing oil every 8-10k miles as recommended. Yes, using Mobile 1 as recommended for these engines. Is this the part where you tell me it's too long, and I should be using different oil that what MB recommends?

86k on motor.

No I won't put salt on the wound .. I personally change my very often , at 7500 miles she's had 4 oil changes. Mobile 1 is not the best oil.

I just received email back telling me that the service department didn't cause the engine issues. They also stated that before picking up the car I was told that the vehicle had multiple misfire events. While I was told this, they also admitted that the noise was not present when the tech was looking at the car. What happened after this, I have no idea.

The service advisor told me that the faults were due to it being time to replace the spark plugs.

Any validity in the fault misfires being related?

Faulty spark plugs can be the source of misfiring. But usually misfires trigger CEL at some point.
Did you notice anything about misfire before dropping the car for springs work?

No. No CEL, no drivability problems, idle problems. oil burning. No engine ticks or strange noises at all. I just picked the car up and it sounded like metal to metal.

I just had the oil changed at the dealership 2 weeks prior when the car was in because it broke a serpentine belt. After the belt broke, I immediately turned the car off, so there is no chance that it overheated.

Thanks for the help.
