What if someone stole my car..

I was thinking of this last night, my friend has a garmin gps system in his car and it requires a password to open it. The reason is because if someone steals the car, they won't be able to track down the person's house. Now for us, if someone steals our car somewhere else then our homes.. can't they go on the navigation and go to our address and break in to our homes?

yes. that's why i don't save any address as "home", "office", "girlfriend's house", etc.

same reason why i only give the valet the car key and not my house key, etc., attached to it. and i don't leave my insurance card or registration in the car either, or any other identifying info, for that matter.

yes, i've watched too many movies! lol.

i think everyone is a little too paranoid or have something else to hide if things like this go through your mind . if a thief wants your info , he's going to get it no matter what you do . i think the VIN on your car would be enough to get your info . like the song says " i've got friends in low places " .

That's the first thing that I would do if I stole someones C63. I would look at the address history in the navigation, find his girlfriends address, go to her house and hang out with her for a while...then and only then I would destroy his tires in constant burn outs....

for the GPS, i generally only put the "home" location to a major intersection near my house that I know how to get home from. This way they can't follow you home if the car/gps gets stolen. I have heard of people putting the "home" location to the closest police station to their home but i don't think thieves are that dumb.

The way I see it, if someone steals my car and then comes to rob my house...they're coming for a whooping. No one touches my cars

What about all the cars sitting out front of peoples houses with garage door openers in them. I bet more often then not there is no locked door between the main house and the garage.

Yeah. I don't leave handheld garage clickers in the car either. And the Home Link doesn't work with the engine off.

my friend had a car stolen that way. they broke into his daily driver vw and actually moved it from in front of the garage, opened the garage and drove away with his 2003 mach 1 (keys in car).

I'm not going to get into responding to all the posts. But here is the deal. The issue with teh home address being programmed into handheld units was that thieves would break into the car for the gps unit and potentially teh garage door opener if one exists. They would then leave your car and go take care of business later on at your property.

A previous poster was correct in setting the home location to a gas station or intersection far enough from your home, but easy for you to navigate from to get home.

The built in GPS in peoples cars, well thieves generally steal your car to either go for a joyride, or to sell it/strip it down for parts, which is a time sensitive job, and they are not really going to show up at your house.

well dont worry about your silly navigation hunt down your house issues. they could easily run your vin or plates and figure out where you live without stealing your car. Thatd be a hell of alot easier also. Pretty much forget about your car ever getting stolen without stealing your keys or a flat bed. If you bought your car used and only got 1 key, you can have the dealer deactivate the other key track that the missing key(s) were for. If they happen to steal your car without the key you've got much bigger problems, you'll probably never see your car again, retirement fund, credit etc... because they'd be that good of an electronic/programming genious.
