CF Mirror Covers - Buyers Beware

was worth a try, but I paid for it big time. nothing ever hit it, just from car washes maybe?

Good thing those covers aren't too expensive. I bought a pair for like 300 and resold them for 200. They are even cheaper now.

That looks like UV damage on the clear coat. Same thing happened on my Evo8 wing after only 3 years or so. It can be re-cleared by a shop for not too much $$.

my wife bananas! :D
thats just the clear wearing I believe. most of these cheap cf mirror covers have only a thin layer of clear so it wears easily.

most shops can just reclear for you. but yes, nothing beats the real deal cf mirror housings

i drive them all, fast and hard
whether its real CF or imitation it seems your issue is the Clearcoat fading or chipping...

by the way what are the fake CF actually made of, are they just a plastic weave.

are the OE ones an entire CF housing or are they themselves just covers

So add some clear or have a shop do it before you install

Not sure honestly, I think the covers are a real cf shell, but the 1x1 weave is a bit weak imo and the clear coat on them began dulling within a month...I waxed them a few times but improvement was extremely short lived.

I think all the cf mirror housings (oem, revo, mode carbon, etc)....even sls cf housings are technically covers but are incorporated into the mirror's structure and not a slab that sticks on top of the actual mirror. I have seen the sls cf mirrors in person but never the c63 bs cf mirrors or any of the major aftermarket cf housings. ..

Can that be a DIY?

If so, how?

I had the same thing happened to my cf mirror housings...I thought the dealership accidentally nicked it, but I see it's because of the thin clear-coat.

Another case of you get what you pay for. :/

I've used Minwax Clear Seal (home depot) for touch up work. It is used to add clear coat to paint and can be used on CF parts...

Just curious about these "cheap" covers...do they just stick on top of the mirror housings without having to remove and replace anything?

yup, they come with 3m tape and u literally stick them on top. i did this and the fitment was thrown off and there was a terrible looking gap, so I got a body shop to rip them off and I epoxyd them on lol. fitment is now as good as it can get, but I now they are never coming off. there are other non-permanent adhesives to use (other member made good suggestions, unfortunately that was after I had already stuck em on).

I have an appt to get the clear coat refinished on wed, but looking at zephyr's above post, I think I may try the mini-wax stuff first. of course this all for the time being until the real cf housings arrive.

Sorry to hear Derek, it's definitely repairable. CF housing will look more OEM on ur car.
