Headbolt Failure on 2008 C63 Estate
I am waiting for the tow truck at a gas station right now.
I was driving 130km/h on cruise control and suddenly the car started changing gears and slowing down. I didn't get any CEL on the dash.
I drove about 2km to the next gas station at 100km/h and the engine temps went crazy jumping up and down from 120 to 141 degrees celsius.
I haven't noticed any smoke.
The whole coolant is gone, although I added 200ml of coolant last week.
The heating in the car doesn't work. I haven't started it since I stopped on the gas station.
No warranty for me. I'm really depressed now.

Omg how many kms do you have on ur car

This is going to be occuring more frequently now that cars are getting more miles on them. Had the first 3 here go, all with high miles.
Going to suck, many won't have warranty.
Try keep these posts in the head bolt sticky so they can be referenced and counted.

Ok I took the car an indy shop.
We hooked it up to STAR and there was nothing apart from a low coolant level message.
We cheched the engine bay and it turned out to be a leak on the rubber hose from the coolant reservoir to the engine.
We started the engine - NO BLUE SMOKE !
So the headbolts are fine.
Mods please change the thread title to - "Headbolt false alarm"

all this damn headbolt paranoia going on. Im sure its only going to get worse as time goes on and the cars get passed on to second hand owners and get more and more neglected. Just an excuse for everyone to get the cnc ported heads and arp studs to go with that blower kit

Glad to hear it was a false alarm. I know it's probably hard to gauge especially with everything being so much more expensive in Europe than in the US. But approximately how much would you be looking at if it were a headbolt failure? I'm pretty sure the cost is quite prohibitive.

Last time I checked, I could buy a complete used C63 engine for about $7000.
I don't know how much the labor would cost though.

It turned out to be a three-way hose connector (I don't know how to call it) is broken. All of the coolant dripped out on the plastic shield below the engine.
The car should run fine once the part is replaced and coolant is filled up.

More and more we hear about coolant issues or coolant low, does no one actually know what coolant smells like when it hits a hot exhaust, just for knowledge guys pour a little on your exhaust manifold and smell. Cannot believe the op actually kept on driving when he started to have issues, had to have some sort of cloud following the car 2km on an aluminum engine with minimal coolant could be the end of the ride, now the engine has been overheated the first thing to do is change out the transmission fluid or it will be the next fatality.

You're saying I should change my transmission fluid now?

Good point guys, engine oil also. The problem with coolant lose, in this case from a hose is that the temp sender unit only will work properly when submerged in coolant and since the transmission is cooled by the coolant and it is unknown as to what temp it reached, it would be just peace of mind as well as a smart choice, especially if the trans oil has not been changed in a while or even if it was changed days before. These engines create a lot of heat so when deprived of adequate coolant and driven you are on a fine line. IMO change the fluids.

Thank you for the paranoia as I haven't seen pics of your Estate in awhile. That is GORGEOUS.
Because this awesome car warps the very ground it rolls over.
good news. i still dont understand how you drive that low to the ground.

Ok I did my research after reading your posts and I will definitely change the transmission oil and engine oil with all filters.
Thanks for the input guys. I will keep you posted what comes of this on Tuesday.
I only hope the head gasket is not damaged.

$7000!?!?!?!?! a head light alone costs 30% of what a engine costs? how many KMs...I saw a "Used" AMG engine from a C55 for sale with almost 100,000KM and the guy wanted almost 20g's for it ..Anyways I'm glad your car is fine matt!
