Akra exhaust has no cross over?

Really not liking the smooth tone of my x pipe. Love my supersprint mufflers but thinking of deleting the x, putting some cats on and straight pipes.

Akra does this on their setup. With cats, is an x necessary or any crossover?

You hurt performance with an x pipe

Really??? I always thought having the x to balance the pressures between the banks.

I've never liked the smooth sound of what the x does. With my supersprint mufflers, I think I need full straight to get that AMG gargle back. I'll try it Monday when I throw on the cats.

i was toying with the idea of going straight pipes all the way or not and ended up not doing it... this was with some internet searching... there were mixed reviews... i believe it depends on the car... i guess power could be lost somewhere but gained somewhere else... just not sure...

i also noticed the same thing with the akra setup... it was basically straight pipe... but some of the hard core racers such as dadsc63 said that h/x was better i believe...

i have lth and an exhaust system and the only crossover is where the resonator would be... a small x-pipe... i kind of miss the louder sound of the lth with oem mufflers though...

No Mercedes yet.
I really /want/ to like the Akra, but back to back with a stock exhaust, the Akra sounds like an old Chevy. All soft edged and burbly. Wish I could get it with that raspy angry sound.

Hmmmm

I read that an X only helps with evening sound if you have cats. If you have headers and no cats, x helps with scavenging.

So if I install my 300 cell cats, x doesn't do much.......

These engines def like a bit of back pressure so the x will give you more mid range / off the hit torque and the scavenging effect will help top end a good amount. Should've done what i originally suggested in your first thread ! Use MBH straight mid pipes and link it with agency power exhaust that has an x pipe in it and is Valvetronic. With the valves open it's a monster and way louder/meaner then stock mufflers if you can believe it and with the valves closed it's earily quiet. Also 2.75 inch mandrel bent so will flow much better them the kinked/pinched stock 2.5 tubing

Sounds like you need a set of electric exhaust cutouts. I had them on my SL55 and loved them. You can open them a little or a lot. Could help you dial in the sound you are after.

Right now my exhaust is almost all 3". Love my supersprint / carlsson mufflers. They sound awesome.

The x made the tone very smooth and constant at low rpm's. The h or straights give the amg sound. On Monday, I'll get rid of the x.

I'm sure lll get the backpressure by installing 300 cell metal core cats.

Is it better to install cats closer to the header or in the area that the secondaries were?

If you want your engine to meter the cats via the o2 sensors, then the forward location is the best, If not then stick them were the Xpipe is.

Sorry that should be without.

The exhaust pulses from one bank creates a vacuum that pulls the intake charge in on the opposite bank.

in this case it means the rear o2 sensors will be functioning behind the cats

Thanks for the info Mike.....

So I'm going to putt the 2 cats in place of where my x is and finish it off with straights.

I think that should give the car enough back pressure, remove the stink of catless, and make it sound like an AMG should.

I've noticed that with an X, I only get the good sound when I'm really on it....at cruising and normal acceleration, it sounds deep, constant, and lacks any growl.

Bad430benz had it right when he went straight pipe all the way. There may be a small loss in power.....especially with 3" all the way - but the sound it made was awesome. I think he was catless and supercharged.

W can make an Xpipe, with a very small crossover port. Should add a bit more grunt than our standard Xpipe, while still getting some power advantages of a crossover style system.

I guess that would be similar to the stock resonator.......I don't really think a cross over does very much though if there are cats in front if it other than changing the sound.

Plus the MBH headers are killer - you get the scavenging with the tri-y. The other mhp style headers probably benefit more from an x than these headers. Kudos for designing some awesome headers Mike. Every shop that sees them is blown away and says "these must have been really expensive."
