What do you guys think/know about these oils?
Getting tired of reading how crappy the Mobil 1 oil is for our cars. And yes, I drive my car in all ways, track and grandma. So what do you think about these oils being better for the M156, better than the Mobil 1?

As a new C63 owner who finally decided to buy some of the Mobil 1 ESP after much reading and feedback, I decided on using either olive or canola moving forward and seeing what the heck happens... At least it should smell kinda good...

Well I read great things about luquid moly (German made oil for high performance race cars). Not so sure about Total but redline is also used in high performance race cars.

Yeah. I think I am going to take my car to and INDY and have them put in Liquid Moly and take out the mobile 1. Dealership here refuses to cooperate if it is not what Benz says I have to put in the engine.

I guess there is my concern. Are they all really the same? Aren't we looking for low build up and excellent resilience and lube with hotter engines?
Seems like Mobil 1 is too "thin" and does not hold up after a hot track day...

you'ld be hard pressed to find a wear difference between these oils after a couple of 100k miles of use
getting oil hot and burning off contaminants and water is good
that is why short trips are a harder service duty on oils
much of it is placebo and preference
not saying changing is bad, but that there is nothing wrong with Mobil 1 and 'better' is subjective in this case, not objective
I would never use ANY oil not on the 229.5 list in our case (0W40 or 5W40 wt.)
do a cost analysis
cheaper to run Mobil 1 at 6k intervals vs 'other oil' at 10k?
Mobil 1 at 6k is going to be better than the others at 10k miles
Mobil 1 can be had at <$25 for 5 qts http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-0W...Quart/23636902
if the other oil is $10/qt you can do 5k changes with the Mobil 1 vs. 10k with the other
which will be better?

I've been using Redline pretty much since I got my C63 2 years ago. Engine runs as smooth as the day I got her...maybe even better since she ran Mobil1 for about 10k miles before I bought her.
Anyways, consistency is the key. Which means regular oil change intervals at approximately 6-8k miles, with the same oils. Just make sure the viscosity is correct.

Redline or AMSOIL. I prefer AMSOIL, but either is great. Royal Purple is crap. Mobil 1 sucks in my opinion (oil pressure drops with Mobil 1 in my Trans Am but does not with AMSOIL).

frankly, if you change the oil sooner than later you will hardly notice the difference. filter usually goes sooner than oil.

I'm using Liqui-moly in my C63, seems to have slightly less valve noise then 0W40 Mobil One, and I haven't really noticed my sticky lifter either since switching. I'm running 5W40 Liqui-moly I bought a case of 5 L jugs for a great price.

I think "changing it often" is relative. MB says every 10k miles. We all never go that long. Is 2k miles "often"? I mean what's often? It depends how you drive it. After a track day is a good time to change. But I want to know in the long term, if you had an oil sitting in your engine, whatever the change interval, what would it be.
I also agree with less of a lifter noise by using a better grade oil...

BMW calculates change interval this way when resetting the oil service:
miles to next oil change = 666 x avg. mpg from previous reset
if you average 20 mpg (driving easy in an e46 M3) interval = 13,300 miles
if driven hard and say 14 mpg ~ 9300 miles til next change
I'd say 7-8k changes for our car is fine as long as a good mix of highway/town
if mostly highway the 10k is fine
if mostly city/town I'd do 5-6k
but to each there own

I'm surprise you think negative about redline, used to use them back in my more hard core drag and racing days, but surprised he didn't mention amsoil.
