The best timings to SHIFT GEARS manually?
Hey folks,
I was playing with the manual mode lately because S+ isn't as fast as manual in shifting while speeding. According to what I figured out and learned on when is the best rpm to shift one gear to another:
1st Gear to 2nd Gear: 6100
2nd Gear to 3rd Gear: 6500-6600
4th Gear to 5th and above Gears: 7000, I tried 7100, but it reaches the red line. I guess hitting the redline is bad for the car in which it slows it down and takes off some power. So, I am guessing 7000 is the best for shifting to the rest of the gears in order to not cause harm to the engine and I think while its shifting at 7000 it will probably reach the 7100.
So what you guys think? Any corrections or comments regarding these numbers and timings?
Thanks,
El-Debs

I use M when driving around town because I prefer to control the shift points - I don't like crawling around at 30 mph in 6th gear.
I use M when autocrossing because I prefer to control the shift points - I don't want unexpected downshifts to disrupt the car's balance.
I use S+ on the track because the tranny shift is very fast and intuitive, and because it never misses an optimal shift point. It gets it perfect every time. I'm not as good as it is. I don't think that hitting the rev limited hurts the engine but it certainly slows your time.

Like ZCCT said, unless you do Auto-X where you don't want the car to downshift and upset the balance, the S+ program on the track shifts way better than a human can. Always at max power and never a bounce off the rev limiter. M is fun for a lap or two, but you'll eventualy realize that the car does it better than you do no matter how skilled you are.

Is this on a stock car? I feel like with a tune I can do the 1-2 shift a little later, like 6400ish and 2-3 I can do at 6900.

I think the car will attack shifting very well in S mode but the M mode is a great recreation of manual shifting. I would personally run on track on S mode, not M mode.
Also for the guys driving in M mode out there, did you know about the double shifting capability? Just leave shifter pulled left for 2 secs and you will drop from 5th to 3rd or 4th to 2nd nicely before a turn. Just thought I would mention this.

I have tried S mode for Autox and the car holds gears very nicely. I drove a 2011 GTR back to back with my car, and I drove the GTR in auto with tranny in R and it kept upshifting at the worst possible times.... Mercedes auto mode is very decent.
Has anyone ever had the car bounce off the rev limiter while in S mode? I was in 1st gear and went WOT at about 4500rpm and the car hooked up really good but it hit the rev limiter... Weird lol

Example - you're just cruising in drive and then pull the left shift lever several times to bring it down to 3rd gear. Hit the brakes to bring the car to a stop, and then stand on the gas. The car will go to redline in 1st and shift, go to redline in 2nd and shift, go to redline in 3rd and then start banging up against the rev limiter.

That's exactly the way it's supposed to work. When you select a gear (in any transmission mode except M), what you are actually doing is telling the trans that this is the highest gear it can use. The transmission remains free to do all the automatic shifting it wants to below that gear. Once the engine reaches red line in whatever highest gear you've told it that it can use, the rev limiter intervenes to keep you from spitting pistons out the side of the block.

Ahh I see I see. Cool thanks for explaining. That must of been what I did there.
