Ticking Noise When Warm. . .

Mornin folks,

Ok so I've done my research and I understand the M156 suffers from lifter bleed down. So from cold start, some ticking is normal.

However, my C63 ticks when warm. I'm talking under light load here... with windows up you can hear it inside the car. I don't think this is normal for a drivetrain to be this loud. It's pretty prevalent.

I'm thinking lifters and cam adjusters? Or is it just as simple as switching to some 5W-40 lube?

I've got warranty so I'm not too worried.. just want to shed some light on this.

Thanks in advance.

If you haven't already, check your oil level... the M156 can consume quite a bit depending on driving habits.
You might find that you're getting down (but not low enough to bring on the oil light).

Yeap I would check the oil. These cars burn oil when you drive hard and the light wont come on until its really low.

FYI the dealers will fill it up at no cost.

Gentlemen,

I checked the oil a few days ago when cold, and today after sitting for 10 mins. Oil level is A-OK!

Going to try the thicker 5W40 and see what that does.

If it's under warranty, get it checked out ASAP. The M156 motor has known valvetrain issues. Yes, some ticking at startup after the car has sat for a number of days may be normal, but it shouldn't be audible after the first few minutes if you have enough oil unless there is some kind of mechanical problem.

It's kinda hard to describe. It's more of like a rattle under load than a ticking.

Maybe I'll get a video for you guys.

Im curious. And i dont want to hijack your thread.
But, in my C63 and also ML63, if i am say driving next to a concrete road divider, or in a tunnel, etc. Windows down.

When i am WOT, i can hear a ticking noise too. only under WOT and obviously when the car is at proper operating temp.

Is this the valve thing everyone is talking about, or is that the car pinging?
I will try record the sound and open a new thread. But in the mean time, this clicking/ticking/cracking sound (its not he exhaust) has me stumped.

Thanks

Mine is not only under WOT.. but under light throttle too.

Anyways, dealer says this is how the M156 sounds. Not to worry...

For the longest time I thought my service manager's name was "Couldn't find a problem" cause that's all he ever says.
