I have searched and i constantly see differences in opinion on what oil to use. I know Mobil 1 synthetic. But 0W40 or 5W40 and does it have to be formula M??? Please advise.

We use 5W-40 Liqui-Moly leichtlauf year round for the C63 at the shop.

This is a well worn discussion. MB specification 223.2 attached leads you to spec. 229.5 http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html that lists approved oils, and to a footnote stating: Originally Posted by Killervette

"Restriction: Only SAE 0W-40 und SAE 5W-40 engine oils are allowed !"
Here is the link to the oil on Mobil's site recommended for our cars.

I just looked at that. Of course the store closet to me doesn't have any in stock. Road trip I guess.Originally Posted by jcfay

So far no knocking noise after start up like with mobile1 0w40.

I personally use Mobil 1 5W-40 ESP Formula here in Aus.

When i ran the 5W30 i topped off 2L over 10,000kms.
When i run the 5W40 i top off NO MORE than 1L over 10,000kms

I did the same when I thought it was on approved list. It is approved to 229.51, while our cars specify 229.5. Recently, it appeared Mobil had also dropped the 5W-40 from their product line, but the attached shows it's still offered and meets 229.51, not 229.5. I'm switching to the regular 0W-40 at next change. It's much cheaper here in the States as well.Originally Posted by AMG893

0w40 oil is only thinner than 5w40 when it's cold. It is no thinner at operating temperatures. with multi grade oils, the first number represents the weight when cold, the second when hot.Originally Posted by Merc63
5w40 spec for these cars. 0w40 in winter, otherwise it's too thin.

Use M1 0W40, You'll burn a little more of it at startup, but it will protect your engine considerably better. Besides, AFAIK the M1 5W40 Formula M is no longer made.
I think i am headed to Walmart to grab some 0w40 they have. I plan to do the change this weekend.

That's what I did. With my Mityvac it was easy peasy. Hate Walmart, but a much better deal on oil for the MB.Originally Posted by Killervette

Agreed, hate Walmart but it's half the cost of Amazon. Don't have a mityvac but I do have a lift and a huge oil catch basin. So it shouldn't be too bad.Originally Posted by jcfay

You should drain the oil cooler as well since you have the facilities. You will need ~ 10 quarts/liters. Get new seal rings for the drain pugs. The oil cooler takes an aluminum seal ring and the sump a copper ring so you will need 2 different rings. Not a bad job at all.Originally Posted by Killervette

Is my engine going to blow up? I used Royal Purple 0W-40 on my last oil change.

Hopefully not unless the M156 has exposed brass parts (there are numerous reports of brass engine parts and transmission synchros falling apart after ~1500 miles on Royal Purple). I would get it changed ASAP with an approved 229.5 oil because Royal Purple is about as bad as oils get.Originally Posted by norb

Why on Earth would you put an unapproved oil in your car in the first place? I am really perpelexed by people who think they know better than the AMG engineers who designed it and keep testing these things what is better for their engine...

I'm not vouching for RP but just because an oil wasn't submitted for MB approval doesn't mean it's no good...Originally Posted by Diabolis

But if not tested by MB, there's no scientific basis for assuming it is good.

Of course it does - at least as far as MB engines are concerned. If it was good they would have submitted a sample for testing. It may be a great oil for a lawnmower or a tractor, but certainly not for a MB.Originally Posted by Jasonoff

Google "royal purple engine failure" and you'll see just how good it is.
