Mobil 1 no longer available at dealer.

Don't know if this is old news or new, but, I went to the dealer to pickup oil and a filter and was told Mobil 1 no longer available. The person couldn't tell me who makes the oil. List price $11.86/qt.

Wal Mart sells 5 quart jugs of 0w40 for like $25. You can change it twice as often for the same price.

ExxonMobil no longer comercially makes the Formula M 5W40. The Mobil 1 0W40 is a better oil though in terms of engine protection that the Formula M ever was or could be, so just use that instead.

I bought some and sent it away for analysis. I will report back. I was told it was developed by Shell and Petronas.

Ditto. Why go dealer when you can go cheap at Walmart.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would share the MB oil VOA results when you get them back. And, now that Petronas has spent huge amounts of money to become Mercedes' F1 team long-term title sponsor, I suspect that the agreement contains a provision or two about the "official" MB oil for their street vehicles as well. The interesting thing is that they haven't simply switched over to Petronas for the street cars.

AFAIK Mobil 1 0W40 is still the only MB 229.5 approved oil that is made of PAO & ester base stocks only w/ no group III hydrocracked dino juice, an 11.8 fresh TBN (when even the full-SAPS AMSOILs have a TBN of around 10), relatively high ZDDP content, great HTHS for the viscosity range, and flows easier than anything else with that viscosity range when cold and still stays thick enough when hot. A few months ago I decided to have a look at the specs of all of the MB 229.5 0W40 & 5W40 oils listed on BEVO that are available in NA, and I can't find anything else out there that's even remotely close to the M1 0W40 in all of those areas. All of the Shells, Castrols, Valvolines, Liqui Molys, Pennzoils, Quaker States, MOTULs, Totals and all other Mobil 1 oils look like they have at least some group III base stock as they are nowhere near the 0W40.

Would love to get my hands on some of that 0W40 "AMG High Performance Engine Oil" though and do a VOA to see what's in it. If anyone sees some on their dealer's shelves, please let me know. In the meantime, use M1 0W40.

Who knows for sure. It could be Mobil 1 5W40 rebranded or just as easily supplied by someone else. Just something he has been told by someone else. Right or wrong, it is hard to say without any proof of any kind.

Yes I did and here is a link to the post.

I also did an interval in our 2011 GLK 350 that I took a sample from yesterday because we ended the lease early. I will post a thread with details when I get the UOA back.

If M1 Formula M 5W40 has been discontinued, I wonder what the folks over at the AMG forum is recommending to use in the US or else where. I still have 6 of the 5-40 stuff in the garage, probably trying to find 4 more for a last oil change.
