Wheel studs conversion kit
Racingbrake is pleased to announce the availability of wheel conversion kit for your Mercedes:
Conversion is very easy, just torque those high strength bolts down and you are done - Replace OE's wheel studs and save a lot of trouble and time when you need to remove your wheels for tire or brake jobs (especially for track guys).
Wheel nuts are available in cone or ball seats.
RB wheel studs are made of alloy steel, heat treated, and certified to SAE 10.9 class. They feature an 8mm hex head for easy installation and replacement.
Wheel nuts are made of alloy steel, with chrome plating for an attractive and lasting finish.
Thread Spec: M14x1.5
Length: 80mm (3.15")
Proof Load: 830 MPa (120,000 psi)
Tensile Strength: 1,040 MPa (151,000 psi)
Installation: Torque studs to 40-50 ft-lbs.

Folks, today I finally got around to installing the RacingBrake Stud Conversion kit on my car. Frankly, until Alex talked to me about it, I would not have thought about buying such a kit. However, given how many times I am taking the wheels on and off, they are actually way more practical than bolts. Especially, if you use spacers and have to line up the knuckle (which can rotate freely at the front) with the spacer and the rim to fiddle the bolt in. Many times I caught myself sticking my fingers in through the spokes to the brake rotor and try to rotate the rotor a bit to make the bolts go in. All that time the rim may fall off and it is actually easy to get hurt that way. Not very elegant. That is what the stud conversion addresses.
Installation is a snap. Just put Loctite on the inner thread and use a 9mm socket to tighten the studs with 40-50 lbft of torque and done. You can even delete the single screw that holds the brake rotor in, if you want. That one is notorious to seize and get stripped if you do not replace a rotor in a long time.
Depending on the type of rim you use they have the kit with ball seat or cone seat nuts. Stock is ball seat. If you have summer and winter rims with different seats, as I do, you can get 2 sets of nuts for that.
The studs are extra long so they can handle spacers up to about 25 mm thickness, as many of us use spacers. Enjoy the pictures from the install and feel free to ask if questions.

Here with 15 mm spacers - much easier than with lug bolts, just slide the brake rotor and spacer over the studs, no fiddling to line up knuckle, spacer and rim to mount

This is the rear wheel - I have no spacer there, so the studs stick out further

I had Porsche lug bolts with swivel disk before. Those are hefty. Compared to those it is probably a bit lighter, but pretty negligible compared to what difference a brake change would make, for example. This is not about weight but ease and speed of wheel change especially, but not only, with spacers.

They make them in ball seat also if you're interested. Not sure if Ti has a tendency to loosen on steel studs when subjected to the heat cycles of track driving.... still researching.

Looks complex to me - did you read about the galling concern and hence the need for lubrication and as a result the need for lower torque? I really do want my lugs and nuts to just work without being a worry.......
Also did not see any ball seat nuts, so for me it appears to be a moot point.

Now I just have to find appropriate open-ended black nuts with wheel locks that will fit...

Spot on! I had not really thought about this much before, but since I have the studs I am happy every time I need to check brakes, swap a wheel from left to right or anything else. Especially with spacers it is a must!

Just finished installing this (these?) on all four corners. I highly recommend this kit...it is very high quality. Wheel/tire/brake changes will be a snap now.
Since this is the first time I had the wheels off (bought car in April with new tires) I cleaned the wheels, calipers and rotors up good and it was worth the extra effort. I also had to go to a truck tire shop to get the lugs broke loose after breaking a socket and an adapter...that's how tight someone had put the old lugbolts on. They had to break out the big, heavy-duty truck impact wrench on a couple bolts!
For this reason alone, I'm glad I did this conversion. Would have been a nightmare trying to change a flat on the side of the road. Also looks good, much better than the old rusty and corroded lugbolts.
