The dealer nor MB should pay a penny for this, things go bad at anytime. If you can't afford it , sell it to a buyer who can.... I am so sick of people with the since of entitlement...

The 272 balance shaft is covered by Mercedes Benz. They made the gear out of a softer metal then the chain. If you can show your car has had its oil changed the engine out repair is covered. I do not like to hear people blaming and *****ing when the cars they own have issues, but in my opinion this is something that Mercedes seriously take another look at. People spent big money to own an AMG, and they came with a major engine defect.

The camshaft issue is the exact same problem with different components. People have already tried to get a class action going, but I do not think enough of the cars were intentionally effected for it to win. As the cars age this may change.

What are the symptoms of the balance shaft issue?

Yeah. I agree. Car manufacturers should be free to unleash whatever crap they want on the public. Make the camshafts out of material that won't even last 50K miles, I say. If we're stupid enough to spend our hard earned money on it, shame on us. Even if they knew the materials were bad before selling the cars to us, too bad so sad. Caveat emptor. Enough with this since of entitlement.

Maybe just maybe if people stopped using cheap oil and did oil changes at 3k mikes , such issues would be avoided. I just pulled my cams out to do the head bolts and my cams looked like they just came off the shelf. i use red line oil and get oil changes every 3k miles. I've been around cars for many years and small things like this don't bother me. its all part of the fun..

I would hardly call the recommended Mobil 1 0w40 "cheap oil." And if Mercedes believes the car needs 3K mile oil changes, they should say that. But that is the complication of modern cars with service built in to the cost of the car, they don't want to pay for 3K oil changes. Don't even get me started on the crazy miles BMW says to do oil changes with the built in service indicators.

What I would say is that cam wear in a modern car at less than 100K miles is crazy. If recommended maintenance is followed, basic power train parts should last a looooong time. This motor had a couple of design flaws, that they fixed in later iterations of the motor, and it would be the right thing to do to take care of these flaws to the most rabid of Mercedes customers...AMG owners.

BTW, I pulled the cams on my Volvo with 500K miles and it looked like they just came off the shelf. I ran Mobil 1 the whole time and changed the oil every 3-8K miles. Of course it made .5hp/liter.

Regards,
Justin

Clearly you know little. 3K mile oil change intervals are silly, especially when using high quality synthetic. I've been "around cars" for quite a while myself, and so have most on this forum. These cam adjusters aren't failing because of lack of maintenance, despite what yours looked like when you inspected them.

Ive been around cars much much much longer then you think with over 45 cars under my wings and several race cars I think the knowledge is not the issue. 2nd the cam adjusters had not been issue here rather then cam wear. 3 as far as cam adjuster go, if the owner is so cheap that when you know that parts can fail and wait till it does well I just don't knew what to say about that. However the main case here is about a guy who thinks that because he did a oil change the dealer should be responsible for other parts that have gone bad. Now As for you , please do a little bit more reading and a little less talking... As for oil changes , I'm not cheap and I understand the importance of oil changed and understand that it's not about miles but rather driving , tempetures and othe conditions. But I'm silly with no issues and your smart with can issues. I will for one spend my $100 in oil the way I see fit.

News flash , MB does NOT give a crap about you and understands that with a certain oil and oil changes parts will only fail after the warranty period .. Stop using mobile 1, go to any race shop and see what they think of that oil....

Mobil 1 has a very large product line so you can't generalize a specific blend as a whole.

There's been enough oil analysis reports posted of M1 Euro 0W40 after the MB service interval proving it was still doing a very good job at protecting the engine.

The d__k measuring by specifying how long you've been around cars doesn't prove you've been doing it right

now if you knew who I was and with the several cars the we build and had published you would not be measuring my abilities to built a motor the correct way. Building a motor is not about power but rather building a motor the will last with the power that it makes is a art form. Now I want you to put your Starbucks coffee down and go do a little homework on oils and get back to me when your finished. till then , please stop wasting everyone's time with your lack of knowledge. Thank you

The dealer just called. They said that the cost to replace, proactively, all of the parts that can fail is $743,832.49. I said go ahead with the work. I can't have an unreliable car.

And don't forget to recycle all of your unused bottles of mobil 1 and replace them with royal purple, amsoil, redline or motul. Nothing sold at a parts store will work in a Benz

And I always thought mercedes were long lived vehicles.

Wow did you hear Obamas new speech? Now for everyone who goes in to the dealer for oil changes and after the dealer inspection should any defective parts, such as worn breaks, tires, and or any other parts at the fault of the owner are found. The tax payers of America will cover at no charge to the owner, all parts and labor but wait as due to your inconvenience you will also receive two free cups of coffees for both you and your significant partner at your nearby Starbucks...

What makes you assume we can't afford those cars and rant we shouldn't buy them? Not everyone is dumb enough to waste their money without questioning.

FYI, I took the car to MB Beaverton (Previously taken it to MB Portland, OR) just a couple weeks ago as I haven't been driving the car a lot lately. The service adviser was honest with me. He performed different tests to the cams, came back telling me nothing is wrong with them. Then I told him what happened at the other dealership (they're only 10 miles away from each other). He went again and tested whatever he can, left the car running, tried all different things, nothing was wrong. Said the car and engine are so clean and nothing was wrong with them. Said that could be a left over from the filter when the other MB dealer did the oil change previously, and it burned in the engine so.. so now you tell me, where is the integrity of MB dealer?

And don't assume we don't do oil changes every 3K miles or not use the recommended oil as if you're the only one who does (which I did and previous owner did, had all records from MB).

I have a 2008 e63 nearing 75k miles. I have extended warranty. What else with head bolts should I get done?
