Engine OIL for C63 AMG, question.

Just go to the attached and review the MB recommendations. Pay attention to the region of the world and the referenced footnotes. 0W-40 or 5W-40 are acceptable. Those in the know like Diabolis, explain in great detail why 0W-40 is the best choice. MB did not change anything. This link takes you to the MB approved oils page: https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html

C63 AMG 2013 Sedan Pack Performance
I am reading this topic with lots of interest as I own my car since nov 2015 and I try to know more about it. MB sold me 1 litre of oil and they told that it is Petronas 5w30. I am very surprise about this. I have always used Motul 15w50 or Castrol 10w60 in my previous sport cars. Very strange that MB recommends this kind of oil. I am pretty sure the car will consume oil.

My C63 is just out of from my dealer after having a ticking noise. Conclusion : they changed all hydraulic pushers. Reason : oil. The 5w40 is not good enough for this car when driving fast. I made a top speed in germany to 300 km/h. She made the noise after that despite all fluid controled before.

You're not the only one to go WOT in their car. If the oil was really the issue, such failures would be commonplace. I suspect, you just had an engine with some build issue, and MB was looking to blame someone else.

The high temp specs of M1 0W-40 vs 5W-40 are so close to identical that I don’t see how anyone could think it makes a real difference, and certainly not one like you’re describing. Unless your dealer put a 50W oil in there, which would be bad, I don’t think what you wrote makes any sense.

Using a 50W oil on these engines is a very poor idea

Exactly, mb does not recommend it. The reason why M cars use higher viscosity is because of the turbo which can generate more heat and higher viscosity has more tolerance. But even though, not all M uses 50W. And not all turbo need it either.

Because a 50-weight oil is too thick to flow properly through all the internal oil passages and thus lubricate and cool the M156 engine internals. Yes, really.
And no, it's not the 5W-40 oil that caused the issue with your lifters.

There's a whitepaper on the M156 oil passage design (thought I had it handy but cant find it). They're restrictive because of space constraints.
With a 50 weight your oil pressure is probably high and you're likely not lubricating the bearings enough.
In before engine failure thread...

sorry maybe I wasnt clear... i will try to make sense..0-40 and 5-40 is the same for high temps. I just think that for 100 degrees and more the engine needs 50w minimum or more like bmw does on all the M model : castrol’ 10w60. I owned 3 subaru STi and we all put inside 10w50. In my previous Z3M : castrol 10-60. 5-40 for that engine is not enough. So a w50 would be better for the engine... and this makes sense.

I’ve seen one person post here in the past about running 5w50 without problems in a posting from 2012.
I’ve seen also two postings on German forums about people running 5w50 with no problems.
Then there is the fella from Germany that races his car and only runs w50 on his car, he was posting recently, I don’t recall him posting about engine damage.
But I’d like to see the white paper about the M156 and oil.

In this German thread, the moderator mentions that the 5W50 is 229.5 and while not on the current applicable M156 standard, the 229.5 does not cause problems, without specifically saying that he has run this.
This is Joe Quax, he runs 15W50, you remember his thread:

First 2 threads are inconclusive and not even worth linking (did you even look at the 2nd thread???). There is absolutely no 5W50 listed on the 229.5 spec (http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html)
Last tread he claimed using the 5W50 300V (https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/m...S__28GB_29.pdf) for 60k km and castrol 10W60 (https://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/F...PXE-9P9JM7.pdf) for 7k km...
The castrol is thick AF at 100C, wonder if his motor is still going?
