Engine TICKING sound

Engine started to make a ticking sound last night. Sounds like it could be the lifter as noise is coming from the top part of the motor. Car have 50k miles and ticking came up after i bounced off the limiter twice on 1st gear on a hard launch last night. Car drives fine without any power loss. Does anyone have experience with this? Car is out of warranty so not sure if this is a costly repair or just need a tune up.

Everyone on here has told me that if the car doesnt throw a code and still has full power you are ok. You can scan for codes that didnt throw a CEL too. If nothing comes up you are probably ok.

As you said yourself, it's the lifters.

Happens from time to time, just drive it off, should go away.

My 2009 C63 made the same noise sporadically, but always resolved by the next time I started it up. I remember seeing a brand new SLS sitting on the sales lot at FJMB tapping its little heart away at idle and I knew then there was a problem with these motors.

You're fine. The limiter is there to stop you from going beyond what the engine can do. In other words, as long as you aren't pinging off that limiter every time you drive, you'll be fine because the car wont let you damage it.

As for the noise, probably lifters and as everyone has said, no CEL, have power, you're fine.

but the ticking noise at low speeds is annoying. Gonna drive it for another week and see if the noise goes away. Top off the oil earlier as it was on the low side (first mark off the dip stick). If noise still exist, I will have a local shop open it up and check the cams and lifters to make sure non of them are stuck or damaged. But with the hydraulic lift, I would think it should fix itself with proper lubrication

I doubt i can file any claims to the dealer or manufacturer now especially i dont have warranty anymore at 56K miles.

You can swap them out 100 times, the noise will still be there or return shortly. GL though

Shop just quoted me $5k for new cam adjusters, lifters, gaskets, spark plugs, etc installed.
Sucks not to have warranty and have no choice but to fix the F'king car now. Even if i try to sneak in to trade it in, I will still need to spend $ to pay the taxes for a new replacement car. Not a happy day! ;-O

Why would you get it fixed? it's normal for this cars. It comes on every once in a while on my car after driving it hard. And it goes away after few miles of driving. Nearly everyone I have talked to gets the sound at some point and it goes away.

Mine is not a mild sound. It is loud and its been like this for 200+ miles. I had a master mercedes mechanic inspect it and the lifters and cam adjusters are definitely damaged and needs replacement. I have 56k miles for a 2010. I was also told the pre 2012 have issues with these lifters as they show premature wear and defect. I will need the later version from 2012+ SLS C63 lifters as they are made differently and more durable.

it is definitely not the normal ticking sounds as I had minor ones before at start up or hard driving but this time is quite bad. I dont have a choice but suck it up and get it fixed.

If its a constant ticking the cam has ate through the lifter. Look at all the threads that have pictures. It is NOT NORMAL.

Im having all new lifters and all new cam adjusters replaced this weekend along with a 60k mile tune up service. This is costing me $5k! Just hope the cams are not damaged either. Mechanic told me it is best to change all 4 cam adjusters to be safe but will closely inspect each one after pulling the parts out for a closer inspection

I would contact MBUSA and ask for assistance with this known issue. You might be surprised at their response.

Issue is my car is tuned, long tube headers, intake, no cats, no resonators. It would be a ***** to have to transform the car back or close to stock if the dealer will accept to repair it or even taking a look at it...;-)

Lots of differing opinions, curious what people think of my car. A friend just pointed out my car does it, I've never noticed, never heard inside the car. First video is hood up with the phone about 2-3 inches from the loudest spot by the end of video, second video hood closed by the wheel opening. It's maybe SLIGHTLY louder in person than my phone catches but overall pretty accurate.

It's a 2012 31k miles(50k km) , using "total quartz" 5w40 (although my friend owns a shop who uses liqui moly and I'm tempted to go switch to that just for ****s and giggles)

Sounds completely normal. You can hear the injectors pulsating.

EDIT: Here's what a noisy cam adjuster sounds like.
