C63 Tire noise....are these cars cursed???
Hello,
I need some tire help...for the past two years or so, I've been swapping tires in my C63AMG with various brands (all brands same size: 235front/275rear), Conti, Dunlop, BFG Comps and Yokohamas...the loudest were the Dunlops and Yokos. I mean, when those babies were slightly past the half way point, the tire humming while on the road was terrible.
I just recently purchased a set of BFG's, I like the way it looks, especially in the rears...10.7 sect width...but man, those ***** are just a tad quieter than the used Dunlops/Yokos. I can only imagine what will sound like as the wear.
I thought tires were rubbing - nope. I thought rear end fluid needed to be changed (less than 50K miles; changed it anyway) - nope. I thought it was bad bearings or axles; had them all checked - nope. Car does not vibrate, it ride smooth, but it has this loud tires hums like a freaking huey helipcopter - those like me who served know that sound.
My questions are:
1) Are these cars really picky when it comes to tires thread patterns/brands? A retired Mercedes tech buddy told me that C63's are picky...I called BS, but now I don't know.
2) Anyone had my experience; which brand quiet down your ride?

When was the last time you've had an alignment. Tires wearing normally? I have MPSS and haven't noticed any tire noise at all. I should note though Yoko S-drive's are a bit noisy.

MPSS - as others have mentioned. Surprised those aren't on your list

Thanks for inputs.
Yes, I checked alignment and tires are wearing out really well.
No, I have not tried the MSS, but I do recall the stock Contis getting louder as the wore down.
I wanted the BS tires during my purchase, but local Discount Tire and its warehouse didn't have them in the size I wanted (275/18), so I settled on the BFg-Comps - 2. Those BFg-Comp look huge on the back, they have a 10.7 section width and I like it (looks wise), but they are loud. Remind me of the Toyos, but louder.
So my retired Merc tech was right, these cars are sort of picky (noise wise) when it comes to tires?

What sidewall are you running with 275's? 30? 35?
What air pressure are you running? Is it just the rear you are hearing noise from?
Like others have mentioned my MPSS have been quiet. But the Pirelli's that were on the car when I bought it were quiet as well

The loudest tire I've ever had was a Pirelli pzero. Wub wub wub. I was so happy when I got those off the front of my car.

Now that I think about it, I still have Pirelli's on the front now. No noise from them either

I'm running 275/35/18 in the rear.
I played with different Psi levels...now sitting at 41rear/39front. Usually during the summer, I run 36rear/34front.
The noise seems mainly from the rear, but who knows, it could be from all corners. I just purchased these tires and would hate to toss them (money) and start over again. It appears that is tires what is causing the noise...how freaking annoying. I'll bet it would give someone a headache sitting back there on a long trip.

Could have just been the case, but for that reason, I switched to MPSS and never looked back.

It makes the noise no matter what psi I run.
I run lower psi during the summer months because as you know, psi increases as the tires heat up. With this car, I've seen psi in the 49 to 51 psi ranges during the summer after long drives and I tell ya, it feels really stiff...stiff enough to make you cuss like a drunken sailor. LOL
I guess I'll deal with the noise for now and buy MPSS when it is time to buy tires again.
