Is this PCV valve whining??
What's up fellow AMG owners, this is my first post on any forum! I've read several threads and seen videos but haven't quite heard the sound my car is making yet. I recently got a 2008 AMG C63 base (used) and I love it!!! However, I got a CEL and its throwing codes for both banks running lean at idle. I've seen a couple TSBs about the IM gaskets and bolts and will probably do that but can anyone tell me if they've ever heard a sound like this from the passenger/firewall side of the engine bay? Note: it now has 86k mi. And the sound goes away when I rev anywhere above 1000rpms. Also when I shut the car off, the sound keeps going for about 2-3 seconds, kind of like its relieving pressure???

Yeah you have a leak somewhere. I never heard that whining when my PCV valve was faulty. Probably the intake manifold gasket.

I have the same or very similar sound only when the engine is warm. I will hear it on cold start for a few seconds then it stops which makes me think its some other accessory. Air pump or whatever.
I have re-torqued all my IM bolts, made sure all the PVC connections were good (I have the Weistec Oil/Air separator), all intake tube connections etc all solid.
Haven't spent any other time digging into it. No CEL for me though, not yet anyway so I have ignored it.

I have had 2 different shops that have techs specializing in Mercedes-AMG do a smoke test and they both said its not the intake manifold. Took her to the dealership in my area and they say it is. But I would expect them to say that$$$ they couldn't tell me where, they just said "we're gonna have to take the intake off so you should just replace it"..... I just don't want to replace the manifold if it's not necessary ya know. It only happens when it's up to operating temp too if that helps

I hope you have tiny hands ;-) haha it's a **** to do when you don't remove the intake manifold.

LOL! it is a PITA but possible.
Removing the intake manifold makes it easier if you have the proper tools and spare bolts.

It's not that bad. You shouldn't be charged more than an hour labor.

So I just picked it back up from the shop today and after $340 and 150 trip counted miles now(actually got the lot dealer to split the bill with me so $171), no CEL, no more whining at all(Before, the CEL was coming back after 40-50 miles). My indy Merc tech said the PCV valve diaphragm was shot. Actually pretty sure I'm seeing better MPG and feeling a significant increase in power as well, although it sounds less mean, I'll take that over the annoying *** whining!!! I really appreciate everyone's feedback, and I will be checking out Eurocharged tune and exhaust mods next, just wanted to make sure the platform is proper before tinkering at all. fingers crossed that everything I'm saying remains!

So just a PCV swap? I checked all my connections and everything was solid. So if it's the diaphragm (likely rubber) inside that's whistling, that makes sense.

Yea, looked at the diaphragm and it was torn, creating the whining sound. Also creating an excessive suction of air that resulted in lean condition. Makes sense now that I see how the AMG PCV assembly is designed. Checking just the mounting area and outside wouldn't reveal that, but that noise was quite blatantly abnormal. Or I guess normal for when the PCV valve diaphragm is torn lol

Quite honestly, removing the entire intake manifold was not that big of a deal. Did it last night for the first time. The worst part about it was getting the stupid EVAP hose off the rear bottom of the manifold (right next to where the PCV connects to the crankcase). You're already taking off the upper part of the intake, may as well order some new bolts, gaskets, and disconnect a few more hoses to pull the whole thing off. Took me 3 hours to get the manifold off, one hour was spent trying to get the EVAP hose off. There is a metal clamp, not an Oetiker, but one that you can release with a small awl or screwdriver.
When my PCV needs replacement, I'll surely pull the manifold. The time it took to clean up and put the manifold back on / start the car was maybe 45 minutes or so. I wasn't rushing.

It only takes 2min to yank the breather tube. Pulling the IM is overkill.
I tried getting mine off last night. No dice, not enough room to squeeze the ring clip to together.
Apparently you can just cut the clip with side cutters though. Will give that a go this eve (I should have googled first lol).

My high pitched sound seems to have quieted down a lot. I honestly don't think it's the PCV anymore, oh well.

Yea your whine sounded a little more constant, though it did kind of sound like a cross between a leak and a rubbing. When I heard mine it had more of a frequency fluctuation, I could tell it was a leak just didn't know where from. If you listen closely, it was in and out at a very quick frequency, like in sync with the rhythm of the cylinders at idle

Yea, listening to your vid again, i would almost swear it's the same whine lol. It can get quieter, mine got quieter for a while, then went away, then came back and stayed constant, only after the engine was good and warmed up. Embarrassing! I would be at the stop light revving to like 900 rpm just enough for it to go away and standing on the brakes after it got bad lol. I'd have a good indy tech look at it. from the research I've done and TSBs, it seems like a somewhat common occurrence on ours cars(08-010) at least.
