Fuel system pressure low code p2540
I know people have talked about this code a little bit but mine just popped on last night after i raced an STI (blew it away btw) and im wondering if im okay to drive it before fixing it for a while. It seems to run fine no sputtering or anything.....let me know what you guys think! Thanks

Mine had a crack on the main fuel pump. The dealer first checked the vacuum system and verified it was OK. Next, they flashed the ECU to the latest version (no problem since I don't run a tune). Finally, they replaced the pumps. It isn't cheap. Budget around $2k for a dealer to do it. I used my MBCA discount and the local dealer does 10% off. A non-dealer shop quoted me around $1500. But when factoring in the use of a loaner car and paying MB for the diagnosis, it was a wash financially. If you are handy, you can get the parts yourself for 1/2 what a dealer will charge and save about 4 hours of their shop charges as well.
Good luck!

Wow, less than one year later and I'm hit with the same code. Car is at the dealer today getting checked out. If the pumps have cracked again after one year of daily commuting and no hard miles (~9,000 miles for the year) I'm really wondering what is going on. The first time around I could understand it was an older part on an older car. But a brand new part?

You should have parts warranty at least, correct?

This story makes me happy I spent the money on an extended warranty. I got half the premium back two weeks ago R&R the evaporator on the AC.
This would get me all the way to recovery of the premium and the future would be gravy.

Hi All,
As a follow up, yes I have a year warranty on the MB parts and would have coverage. Dealership took the car out to test and said the pumps check out OK. They think it may actually be the pressure sensor itself this time but aren't 100%. So they cleared the CEL and will replace the sensor if the code comes back. Overall pretty pleased with how they handled it. Now it is just a wait and see if the code returns soon or not.
I didn't get the extended warranty because what I found that would actually cover head bolts would run around $5k at the time (2 years ago). I've got a quote now on replacing head bolts preemptively for around $3200. So it would be pretty close to a wash if the fuel pumps and bolts are my only major items in my first 4 years of ownership. Time will tell.

Sweet. I hate the hassle of the "multiple diagnosis solution"

The reason for your fault could be clogged fuel filters under the rear seat (inside the pumps). We had a series of similar problems in the area I live with M156 AMG vehicles. People had to either replace the pumps, or to cut them open to get rid of the dirt.

Damn, spoke to soon. Light came back 2 weeks after the replacement. Now they are saying it is a leak in the intake manifold and $3300 to replace. What questions should I be asking them about this?
Valjay, the pumps are only a year old and I buy gas from the same Shell station every time so I'm doubtful it is the filter. They inspected the pumps and did not find any problem with ability to deliver fuel.
