COMAND color update, help!
Hello all, I know I might be beating a dead horse here but I was hoping there is someone in Phoenix that could help me update the COMAND colors to the red/silver on my 12 C63. So it wouldn't have been so bad except for the fact that I traded in my 13 C250 that had the red/silver. To make matters worse the new to me C63 (wooohooo!) has the red/black interior!
Any help would be really appreciated!

Nice! I wonder if this can be done on a PFL car.

Hey all, sorry to bump my own old thread, but in refusing to give up on this and having a friend with a STAR I want to see if it is possible to update.
So a couple of questions -
1. If current version is 4.5 ver 1 would updating it to ver 2 allow me to select the colors on my Comand HU? I'm not worried about the screen in the cluster.
2. I can't seem to find a tutorial on how to update with STAR,
3. do I need telematics disc? And if so, where would I be able to find the correct disc?
MY 2012 C63 FL coupe.
Any help would be really appreciated!

our car (even fl 2012) has differnt version based on your ex factory date.
if you list your option code via VIN coder, your car should be code 802 which has sandy color screen, red/silver color screen theme is introduced from code 803 onwards (production date after june 2012)
the telematics disc wont help you because it will only detected by your factory out SA code, which is 802, and update system accordingly in same color theme
you need vediamo (engineer tool) to overwrite your system SW so it will think you are running on 803/804/805 and the display the correct color.
in short, 2 ways to do that:
1)retrofit a HU which is from 2012/6 onwards C class
2)prepare a correct version of telematics disc and use vediamo to overwrite your current system. -which requires more knowledge on your SW skills.
maybe there are other ways i am not aware of, appreciate other members could add up

there is potentially another way.....
if i am not mistaken i have seen posts on "The Other Site Whose Name We Dare Not Speak" that there is a European company ( www.comand.co.uk/ ) where you can send your hard drive and they can reformat it to include the updated color scheme. The name mentioned in every post was a guy named Richard, about which each and every single user said was a wealth of knowledge and great to deal with. I actually just saw these posts yesterday while searching for a remedy for why my Comand was shutting down after 15sec, restarting, then doing it again over and over and over and over again.
hope this helps and keep us posted

I went to that command site and sent a message, hoping that this guy would have a way to update the version of my command. He answered that there is no such thing. According to all the posts, I think he is wrong, which also means that he's not knowledgeable.
I have to admit that two dealerships where I brought the car so far, both said that there is no possible update of the Command OS. But then again, the update thread does say that dealerships will say this, because they're not knowledgeable.
I am willing to pay, to have this done, so I will continue to research this.
Maybe I have to buy the $250 maps update, which they all are willing to offer..

Only way to update the color scheme be it the Head unit or the instrument cluster, is with star diagnostic coupled with vediamo/dts monaco plus a telematic disc for the head unit. Also pre requisite has to be a head unit that is NTG 4.5. Some 2012 cars had a fat pcmcia slot instead of an sd card slot and those are NTG 4.
Least expensive way to get the latest maps is to order the latest map dvd and find a service on google that can provide a map activation code but its not that much cheaper then just going to the dealer and getting the update. Dealerships will run specials sometimes getting you an update for less.
If you get your own star diag system and get to a point where you are updating the modules on your car, you are already smarter than most dealerships.

Then attach it to the cig lighter. You now have a map that's always up to date while charging your phone ridiculously fast. On a drive to work (30-45 mins) my iPhone goes up like 50%

You wouldn't need a new screen or other parts if you are staying in the same generation of navi (NTG4.5). It is not plug and play, the unit is coded to a specific car so if you are using a used unit you still have to go to the dealer and get an anti theft code to unlock the unit for use on your car. Then you have to code the unit with a star diag anyways to tell it for example what sound system the car has installed if it is different from the previous car among other things. Not worth it for only a color change, only worth doing if you want to retrofit ntg5.1 but then you have to change alot of other parts.
Edit: I too would like to know where you can get map updates for 21 dollars.

So if going this route, are the units PNP? Or do I need to take it to the dealer? I found a unit for ~200 from a 2013 C350. Also would I need just the head unit or do I need the screen as well (I'm assuming they are separate) the HU being part of the "stereo" and the screen being stand alone.
1) you need a HU as mentioned
2) you need anti theft code to unlock the HU if you buy one from aftermarket
3) as long as you get the same setup, like MOST or DAB are equipped as same, it will be ok
so my suggestion is find someone who is familar with VEDIAMO and overwrite the system file on HDD.
in both cases, be aware you should never do SCN online code for the HU through XENTRY otherwise you will be refreshed back to yellow/sandy theme as i mentioned. all online code is based on your vin car data from MB headquarter server. when it is found different, your current setup will be erased and restored back to what it should be as ex-factory if you do SCN online code

You cannot get the map updates for NTG 4.5 (2012+) for less than $150-$200 due to the fact that you need a key straight from Mercedes even if you have the disk. For NTG 4.0 (08-2011) all you need is the disc which can be had for as little as $1
If you have STAR and Vediamo setup and able to communicate, I can tell you the steps to flash it as you are already 90%, but otherwise it is too much to explain on how to get this system running.
