Consuming Power Steering Fluid

I've looked around and seen that it's somewhat normal to add PS fluid and people mentioned changing it out at oil change intervals.. but how much is "normal" before there's a reason to be alarmed?

Bought the car 2 months ago and it was low. Purchased a bottle of fluid from the dealer and I've gone through the entire thing already. I've had to add fluid/top off 2-3x. Seems like it eats it up quicker after spirited driving.

Wondering if the pump is burning out, anything else it could be? Haven't had a chance to get it under a lift and looked at yet. I don't see any leaks, but theres a heavy burnt smell after driving. (Seems to be a normal occurrence too) Don't mind the smell, just don't want to ignore anything that could be more serious.

Usually like to fix things on my own if possible, but I purchased an extended warranty on it so I guess I'll make an appointment with the dealer to have it looked at.

Thanks for any advice!

It has to go somewhere and the only place is outside the system, so I would get under it and look for leaks, that is a fair bit of fluid it is using and is not normal by my experience, burnt smell would indicate something is leaking and is either hot or getting on somethign hot to smell.

The under paneling can hold quite a bit of fluid. The high pressure line (#4 below) has 4 crimps for 2 expansion hoses (crimp from hard to soft line). Mine is currently leaking at one of the rear expansion hose crimps.

True. That's what I'm thinking.

When I seen that members were topping off, I was curious if it consumed *some* amount of PS fluid..much like oil levels being 1 qt low after 1000 miles or so. I've put roughy 3,500 miles on the car, so not sure if this would fall in this category.

I'd rather be safe than sorry and I'll get it looked at asap. 👍🏼

It's a sealed system, there's no wear component to change the level in the reservoir, and thermal expansion/contraction is indicated on the dipstick for hot/cold.

This, unlike your engine that can use a little oil through the PCV system or other places not sealing and it can burn and go out the tailpipe, if your power steering is going down, it is leaving somewhere and either dripping on the under tray or blowing back while in motion all over stuff and burning off maybe on the exhaust, either way, it is leaking.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback. I've made an appointment to have it looked at tomorrow morning.

Update: Dealer said it was worn o-rings in one of the power steering hoses.

Also replaced my command dial that wasn't working. Total came to $1129
Gotta love that MB tax- thankfully it was covered under warranty

Do you have the o-ring part number from your work order?

Haven't picked up the car yet. That's just what the SA said over the phone.
I'll let you know once I get it.

Finally picked up the car. Don't even get me started as to why it took them 10 days

Ah, so they did replace the same line as well. Different part number than my 2010 so maybe they updated it.

#4 in the image I posted above 2044601624 is on backorder. Maybe I should cancel my order and nab the one they replaced on yours.

I had cleaned everything up a few weeks back so gotta check this weekend if it's still leaking.

Edit: Pics from mid December. It pissed out of that high pressure hose and went everywhere...

Have a 2011 c63 leaking in the same location. Not exactly sure where it is coming from, but after seeing your pictures I am assume mine is from the high pressure hose as well.

Did you replace with 204-460-1624 or 204-460-06-43 and how difficult to do?

It's actually an upper oil pan leak which is quite common.
