Map Update Email
Anyone else get this in their email from the dealer? Not the usual $500 but seems interesting.
I have not called them to see if it would apply to the C63 but it might be nice. I know ways to download gps maps for free, wonder if the same could be applied to these?

If you do, please report back .
$500 was a year or so ago, seems they have updated the price I guess. Makes me wonder how different the update is compared to what we have now.

1) This could be ligit from this dealer as a promo but call to verify. There are folks out there selling used update discs which are a one time use only item from my experience and because the price looks good they look like a deal but are a scam. They won't accept returns.
2) Group buy of one CD to be used by a group won't work because of this one time use only feature. We tried that!
3) The price for the update for my 2011 E350 in 2014 was $200 CDN club price so around $225 for the disc only.
If you notice it says "Schedule Service" and there is an asterisk beside the price. What does that mean? My bet is that $249 is the update CD cost and they want you tp pay to have it installed.
Dealers will charge a couple of hours to do the install so you folks who paid $350-500 paid for labour. You do not need to do that. It takes about 2hr in your garage, instructions are clear and you need no special tools or no resets requiring a dealer input.
4) When I did the update n 2014 I was royally pissed at what was missing. The best example of that was the South Frazer Perimeter Road around Vancouver. The project started in 2008 and was completed in December in 2013 and it was not on the update. When I called to ask I was told that every update they offered would be up to 2 yr behind actual because they always validated the Beta version before offering it for sale. Contrast that to my little Garmin 40LM which updated the minute the road opened with it on it and my iPhone maps in Apple Maps and Google Maps were right up to date.
5) Like others, I find my phone much more efficient because it is always up to date and Siri is an option. Its voice directions are far superior in my experience.
6) As a matter of personal opinion, the voice entry can be frustrating and you need to be very clear and have a sense of where you are when the locale you are in can be ambiguous which the phone does not seem to suffer. Manual entry also can be frustrating.

I agree that it's not worth doing. The in car nav is so antiquated, and the phone is much more usable. For example, most of the time I type in the destination name and not the street address in the phone. I think it's a waste of time to type in the entire address in car.

I received mine via mail a week or so ago. I thought about ordering the DVD because my car has never had the maps updated. But, like most here, I primarily use my phone

+1 to what Alex said.
The roads in Vancouver are changing pretty regularly given the construction and infrastructure spending, and the nav can be hopelessly out of date the very moment you update it. Really frustrating.

As an add on to my comments, I spent some effort last fall trying to track down some technology which would allow me to a) defeat the blocking of playing video on our screens and b) streaming the output from Google or Apple Maps on the screen from my phone or an iPad Mini.
My thoughts were to put the money of an update into something more perminent.
I found the technology which according to the suppliers would allow the DVD player to be used under any conditions. They also theorized that streaming the maps was possible through the USB but they could not confirm they had done it nor give me one reference to someone who has actually done it.
It was not cheap ($1800 CDN) so I walked away. Not really a very good idea in the end. It would eat data if used full time. It would be handy when the NAV in the car cannot find what you want but still not worth it in the end.

Well you can get the DVD unlocked to play in motion for $200, so $1800 is a bit of a rip, no idea if it will allow the USB to stream though - also lets you input navigation instructions wile moving (that is why I got it)

I can do video like a movie in motion, enter nave with the controller while in motion and anything else that was motion locked. Install is 30 seconds just put the file they provide on an sd card and follow the instructions!

Now the big question. Since you can watch video while rolling down the road can you play a movie off your phone using the USB cable? If so seems to me you can mimic Google Maps again recognizing that it will eat data.
I would still love to have that as a back up choice if the NAV does not have what I am looking for.

I was at the dealer today, it was $249 as the email said, they use their DVD and charge something like $114 for the maps and an hour labor to install as it has to be connected to Star to get the install code or license.

I inquired about it at my dealer and my SA said it is a disc and the car will need to be on for it to be updated to the hard drive. He mentioned they will charge a hour of labor to update or I can do it myself by either letting the car idle or throwing it on a battery charger. I plan on doing it myself whenever I drop off the car in August for service.
