Another UOA for the Shell Rotella T6 5W40 in my car. This oil has been in the car for 2 years but only 1728 km. The oil is in great shape but I did not have the TBN assessed so I changed it out for more Rotella T6 and this time a couple of cans of Ligui Moly MOS2 to try to get the molyslip level back up as the new shell formulation doesn't seem to have any in it and the level in my UOA keeps going down. I sent this sample to the lab out west for the first time and they did not include any history so I will re-post the last report for some continuity although it is already posted in this thread somewhere. I added the files as PDF attachments for those wanting a picture that is easier to read.

HD oils don't contain much moly because they are formulated for high detergency, not for a high degree of friction modification, like API Starburst oils are. These two additive formulas will compete with each other for space on the surface of the metal. It's an either-or situation. That's partly why after-the-fact additives, such as zink, moly and others are counter-indicated....not a good idea.
It's said that the actual additives in the formulas should be in a certain ratio, or in "balance", for them to work properly, or they in-effect poison the formula.

I'm using Maxlife 10w-40. It has low volatility, and wear control is no problem. I use it mostly for the seal conditioning, which is a good idea.
