Safety Recall

Just received a recall notice for insufficient electrical grounding, when combined with other factors could cause the airbag to deploy. No parts available for the fix, but will receive another notice when they do. Pretty wide recall across certain models and model years from '12 - '18.

I called first week of nov to mb terminal in Vancouver Canada and no recall is in for my 2012 p31 coupe. Idk might change they said they update me if anything changes

I went in for B service a few weeks back and asked the SA about the Takata recall. He said that those recall replacements were starting in the South, and I would be notified when to come back in.

OP: I've not seen anything yet about the safety recall you mentioned.

With apologies for hijacking your post to talk about Takata:

I'm in Houston, which certainly qualifies as the hot and humid environment where they were planning to start first. I recently asked my SA the same question, and got the same answer you did - they will notify us when replacements are available and ready to install.

Has anyone had the Takata airbag replacement completed yet?

Oh man, what's worse? Potential shrapnel in the face for the older bags during legit deployment or spontaneous deployment but no shrapnel in the face with the newer bags? LOL

If I'm reading this right, it says 1,090 W204 C63 sedans and 1,245 W204 C63 coupes (see blue below). I have no idea how many were imported or what % of our cars this represents. Can anyone help with the numbers?

Vehicle 14 : 2012-2015 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG COUPE
Vehicle Type : LIGHT VEHICLES
Body Style : 2-DOOR
Power Train : GAS
Descriptive Information : 204.377 GJ7H 1245 Vehicles. The recall population was determined through production records. The recalled parts are different from the parts not included in the recall in that they do not contain grounding to the chassis.

This recall has separate listings for C63 Coupe and Sedan, and affects the W204 and W205 models :/

Since the Recall explicitly states the "Recall Population was determined through Production records", perhaps we can use our Vehicle Master Inquiry to determine Production Date and see if our vehicle is included in Recall if we haven't heard anything back from MB.

I don't think that knowing production date would help.
The recall notice says the same thing for every model variant listed: Production Dates : NOV 03, 2011 - JUL 23, 2017

I ran across a link in the forum that suggested 2009 C63 production was about 2,200 cars. https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...roduction.html
Not clear if this is total production or just US sales.
If that number is US sales and continued at that rate thru 2015, that's about 15,000 cars. The C63 part of the recall is estimated at about 2,300 cars, which is around 15% of the 15,000.
If the 15,000 is total production, the percent of US cars being recalled is probably closer to 60-70%

Here's an interesting article that describes the initial reports of a couple unexpected airbag deployments and the subsequent investigation process. Good detective work!
Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/201...7V627-0673.pdf

It appears that there have to be multiple failures to cause the airbag to deploy. One is a broken clockspring in the steering wheel. They comment that this would cause an airbag warning on the dash, so if you've got an alert it's smart to get it looked at promptly. The other required event is an electrostatic charge-buildup in the steering assembly. This can be eliminated by providing an effective ground, and that's what the recall procedure apparently does.
