nah. you should be fine to even supercharge it with a stage 3 blower.

only kidding. Anything older than 2011 has old headbolts.

Any amount of research on the forum would have led you to the knowledge that any 2010 and older is affected. Some early 2011s are affected as well.

So I shouldn't buy a 2009 CLS63 with the following engine code.....156983 60 041058

How much does it typically cost to replace the head bolts?

Depends...are you doing the work yourself? In that case wouldn't cost more than $500 if you were to just do headbolts and required replaceable gaskets. Are you having to pay someone to do it? Get ready to spend a couple grand to get everything sorted. IMO if you're going that deep to do the headbolts you should be replacing a few other key components inside the engine.

I'm mechanically inclined so I wouldn't be afraid of doing it myself if it's only $500 and I'm sure there's a write-up somewhere on the internet. What else should I put on the list to replace?

I'm hoping I can talk the dealer down from their asking price for the cls63. I'm also looking at a 2006 CLS55, I'm a little more comfortable with that chassis since I have a W211 E55 but the M156 seems like such fun beast. I've done valve covers, fuel pump, supercharger pulley and struts on the E55....

Depending on the mileage, the lifters while you're in there, and may be swap out the camshaft adjuster plates with the ones from 63 motorsports. Definitely new valve cover gaskets if they are older than a year or two since they are fairly cheap. You'll need the green colored ones on an older (pre-facelift) motor.

PCV valve on the rear of the engine will need to be replaced if hasn't already. That also requires new intake manifold seals. While you are doing that, I would change the injectors.

....So you're saying I should buy the CLS55. haha. CLS63 only has 44k miles but they want almost $29k which is silly. The CLS55 has 140k and they want 14k for it. I'm not too concern with mileage because I'm going to drive it and not park it in my garage plus, I bought a low mileage MB before (W221 with 39k miles) and had to replace waterpump, radiator and ignition coils on both banks within 5k miles. I'm going into it expecting to have to work on some things. Thanks for all the info, lots of good stuff for me to chew on. Appreciate it!

Just look at my thread I believe I say what all I replaced on mine when I did the headbolt job. Car runs like a dream now. I have receipts for everything if you wanna know roughly what the cost is gonna be. Just PM me and ill answer any questions that you may have! Good luck on your purchase!
