whats this whining noise

When it rains it certainly pours. Next problem.....High pitched whining sound coming from the what appears to be the front/driver side of the motor. Increases with the rpms when in neutral. I can also hear it in when starting out in first or second gear from a stop. Im thinking power steering pump taking a sh*t?

Does sound like it could be the power steering pump, did you check the fluid level?
Does the sound change or get louder when moving the steering wheel?

I would worry about that one too as it is pretty loud and not normal, it does sound like pump whine from the PS pump (take a hose and put it to your ear and the other end near the pump to verify noise if PS pump), check level, I have had luck in a few cars with changing it to get rid of the whine just empty an fill the reservoir do a few lock to lock steering rotations and then empty the reservoir and fill it - do that 3 or 4 times to get most of it changed.

If it persists, it may be just a dying pump as they are a week point.

Fluid level is good. The pitch changes a bit when locking the wheel. Must be the pump then....

Back to the dealer it is. Ill let the warranty deal with it instead of trying to do a few drain/fills

Dont you like to go to the dealer/mechanic with some idea of what the problem is before you drop the car? I ceratinly do. Instead of just saying "I hear a noise etc..."

I have the tech who is working on the car come out from the bay and listen to the noises Im talking about before I leave. Ill offer any suggestions of what others have experienced before to hopefully pinpoint the problem

Actually no, i dont.....99% of the time i am the mechanic who will be diagnosing/working on my vehicles(and others for that matter). But as a long time mechanic i can tell you that there are 2 reasons as to why NOT to do what you are doing....

1)It has potential to give the mechanic tunnel vision as to what the real issue is. If you present him with a notion of what it may be chances are he will follow that path and not look outside the box so to speak, meaning your issue may not get resolved.
2) and this one i HATE with a passion....sometimes techs will feel compelled to follow a customers lead JUST TO GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT...If a customer brings in an issue and with it comes 29 pages of forum conjecture there is a good possibility that said customer will not be satisfied until you have WALKED THE PATH THEY LAID OUT FOR YOU.....when this happens your issue will most likely still not be fixed but your bill will be WAY higher because you "got the remedy attempt that YOU ASKED FOR"....(Hell, i dont want my mechanic coming to my office and telling me how i should present a case in court, he came to me for MY expertise meaning: i got this so sit back, shut up, hold on, and prepare to be AMAZED by legal wizardry!!!! otherwise Pro Se is their best friend...)

...in the end my opinion is moot, but fwiw the best path is to describe the issue and the circumstances under which it occurs and let that be IT, any more and you are asking for problems. If when you get it back there is still an issue, THEN is when you load both barrels of the forum scatter gun and fire away.

in the end you are taking it to the tech for THEIR expertise and training, let that be that and ONLY if your issue isnt resolved should you offer advice....

Bumping for more ideas...

PS pump/reservoir replaced
IM gaskets replaced
All idler pulleys and belt replaced

Same noise still there. Increases with rmp whether motor is hot or cold. Pitch doesnt change when turning the wheel. 🤷*♂️

With the alternator being located in the lower right side of the motor and the noise emitting from the upper left side of the motor, I doubt it. But pinpointing this specific location is hard.

I pulled the belt off and ran the car for a few seconds and the noise remained. I think that eliminates the alternator also? Or just the pulleys...not sure

I've seen a post or 2 making reference to gear whine from the cam adjusters because they were straight cut. But I wonder why this is not a wide spread and common noise among all c63/m156 cars.

Or a sign of an adjuster that has significant wear?

Maybe I'm not listening to your video properly, but to me it sounds normal. I've had a similar sound since day one, and it's been many years and miles.

It is common. Mine sounds exactly the same. It's probably why someone made fun of you in this thread.

I remember making this post last December as soon as that noise popped up. Never heard it prior to that. Sounds terrible while driving at low speeds tbh

Guess I'll have to find some local cars to see if it's considered "normal"

Or you could stop being a cheap ******* and actually try taking it to someone who can properly diagnose your car, rather than asking a bunch of Internet strangers what’s wrong with your car from a poorly recorded sound clip.

You need to give it a rest. Be gone

If you cant hear anything from a hd audio clip then keep it moving

Have you completely flushed your PS fluid? You would need to do it twice to make sure its all gone and that should reduce the sound significantly.

Took this Today. Car has 62,XXX miles, and no mechanical issues at all. Camshaft adjusters were replaced at 58,000 miles. The noise coming from my car sounds quite similar to the noise your video shows. One thing you gotta understand is that this is a big engine, and as such it's gonna make a a lot of "mechanical" noise. I've driven 7 different FL C63's and 1 BS. They all make this whining noise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY135_uCa8M&feature=youtu.be

EDIT: This whining noise is NORMAL, and is no way a sign that there is something wrong with the car.
