The only problem with the mOs2 addictive is loses suspension and separates from the oil. Settling at the bottom of the pan or any crevices. It can eventually lead to build up... molygen works great for instantly quieter engine. But it simply masks a problem. While ceratec fills in the nano wear. The hydraulic lifter additive works just as well as mOs2.

some of these thicker oils can rob power. I usually run 2 can of ceratec and top off with 0w40. I make sure I’m slightly under 9qts. This car can run weird with too much oil.

What analysis do you need? Molygen is basically liqui moly high tech with ceretec added to it.
You need to learn how oil works. The tapping and noisy cam adjuster sounds have absolutely nothing to do with how the oil prevents wear.

Exactly what a few knowledgeable people in this thread have been trying to tell you over and over.

I don’t think you understand what it means if an oil is 229.5 approved.
All the oils listed are approved for several Mercedes engines and not just for the M156. The manual clearly states to use only 0w40 or 5w40 for the AMG (M156) out of the 229.5 list.

The jug at the top of the thread lists 229.5, and the latest bevo listing shows a couple of 5w-40. What am I missing? I really don't think the company would list 229.5 on the label if it's not really approved.

Well, liqui moly molygen is not listed. It might fulfills the requirements, who knows.

Oil is like no other on car forums .

I wouldn't get too hung up on brands and actual spec approvals , it's at great cost to gain thus the product is marketed at a higher price , so it's a marketing decision .

Non approved oils can be just as good , if they weren't my VW PD camshaft lobes would of been done a long time ago .

Really? You've been luckier than I then...
I tried the purple LiquiMoly to try and stop the noise, but it's still there. Ran with Ceratec also.

And that's after having the lifters and adjusters replaced...

Yes, there's a min/max viscosity range. I believe 40W is 12.6 - 16.3mm2/s @ 100 °C

Run molygen and half can of there lifter additive and your car will sound brand new. Sometimes at idle you can't even tell my car is running at a stop light.

different oil's although the same weights will have different flow rates. some swear that x weight makes more power than x weight of another brand but in actuality this is due to the fact the oil pours much thinner than its competition. same could be said of a oil that quiets down an engine. it may pour thicker than its competition.

although, i do agree partially with all views and opinions, i do have to say without an oil analysis we'll never know for sure. additionally, per many other discussions here, if i recall MolyGen is not approved because it has too high of PPM of different additives which push it outside of the realm of 229.5. molygen maybe a superior oil, but it does not fall in line with the requirements of 229.5 certification.

Lots of us run oils not on the 229.5 list. I do. But it’s backed up by constant oil analysis.

Without data, basing an oil on how it sounds or feelings about it, well good luck with that. Usually doesn’t end well and it’s only luck if it does.

Easily found on the data sheets , I've always found oil grade too crude a ( pardon the pun ) measurement , whereas centiStokes is the precise measurement .

There was this decade old argument between two oil grades , turns out under Castrol's production there was only 1 centiStoke in it !

If the line was drawn 0.5 different...

I know a couple of years, Liqui Moly wasn't listed on bevo's list of approved oils but checking bevo's list now, Liqui Moly 5W-40 is approved for 229.5.

Oddly, if you search the German version of the Liqui Moly online catalog, Molygen doesn't appear. If you search as MB (USA/Canada) it does. It seems to be only marketed in North America.

Molygen came out with 5w50. This might be the best oil for your cams, lifters and adjusters. Perfect for you track guys also.

A xW-50 weight oil is much too thick for the M156. It doesn't flow well enough to cool and lubricate the engine internals, which will lead to premature wear.

Er - no. Please show us where it says that a xW-50 oil is approved in any M156 engine.

Moly,, ,bah!!
If one need to preserve the camshafts it is ZDDP that is the ****.
Yes, it might be hard on catalythic converters, but those are cheap if having racecats compared to four oem camshafts.
So, run just a slob of Redline additive and be done with it.

https://www.redlineoil.com/engine-oil-break-in-additive

ZDDP is well known to save camshafts, even by oil manufacturers, almost no one uses moly in their oils.

Guess what , too much of a good thing...

Very true of oil , very much a balance and too much zinc is a bad thing , like adding an extra egg in a recipe .

So the oil + Red Line break in additive ,
will = ?? Zinc ppm

Indeed - you can certainly add too much. Besides, modern oils are using boron and various polymer ester base stocks and/or additives to achieve the same anti-wear protection that ZDDP provides for the camshaft and lifters without the problems associated with ZDDP (not just to the catalytic converter) and in particular when it is just added to the oil as an afterthought. The title of the article below is somewhat misleading, but it addresses what happens when you add "aftermarket" ZDDP additives (it lowers the TBN and the oil can no longer provide protection against acids that form as a result of moisture in the oil pan from shorter trips (i.e. daily driving) to the engine and can furthermore form deposits that block various oil passages.
https://www.onallcylinders.com/2018/...to-save-money/

As for the Red Line Engine Break-In additive, this is what it contains:

Bottle (16oz) contains:
33.8 grams total ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate)
17,000 ppm, 7.8 grams Phosphorus (P)
20,500 ppm, 9.4 grams Zinc (Zn)
16.6 grams Sulphur (S)

We're indeed much better off leaving it to the tribologists to properly formulate oils to begin with. There are plenty of very good oils for every type of driving (whether you're racing or looking for an extended OCI and everything in between) already on the market.

Let's get talking again guys! I've moved on to a w205 63 and just did its first oil change. This car has the filter under the car and I didn't feel like doing it on stands and took it to the dealership. They wanted 230 and after a chat got it done for 200 all in with tax.

I had 2 choices
229.5 5w50 and 229.5 high performance 0w40

I went with regular 5w40. anyone know the difference and know what oil mb is using today in the regular 5w40?
