Removing Secondary Air System

I feel like I'm missing something in my search but I can't seem to find any details on this, either because I'm not finding it or it isn't often done? I've noticed that since tuning, I've never once heard the secondary air pump kick in on my car, not even in -5C weather after sitting overnight. The whole system just seems like a superfluous pile of hoses and valves and I feel like it could be removed easily. Would there be any appreciable downsides to doing this?

There’s really zero benefit in deleting it unless yours is broken or you want to save 3lbs of weight. It’s only active at startup, otherwise off. You’ll get codes if you remove it, and may not pass emissions. Just leave it alone IMO.

Funkwagen did you ever end up doing this? I need to make room on the drivers side for brake ducting so the secondary air pump has to go. Looks like I can just pull everything out, plug vacuum lines and make blockoff plates for the intake manifold. Was curious if you ended up with any codes etc. Thanks.

Pretty sure you will get a code. Just had my glk secondary pump stop working threw a code. Assuming it would do the same if it was missing.

You’re going to get a code. Can be turned off with Xentry

+1. I believe my EC V5 has it turned off as it doesn't show up as a monitor on my OBD2 scanner.

Was going to say, I know it's an older car, but when the SAI went bad on my W211 E55 I was able to have it shut off thru Xentry to turn off the CEL and stop the codes. No idea on removing the whole system tho.

Thanks guys. Guess I’ll just rip it all out and deal with the codes until I can get it programmed out. Wish me luck...

Ok. Another question. I’ve been digging around trying to find a different route, but the pump has to go.

There only appears to be one hose leading out of the pump. Instead of making EGR blockoff plates for the intake manifold - never mind figuring out what to do with the heat shielded lines going down to the exhaust somewhere... Would it be possible to just remove the pump and block off the one hose that leads up to the EGR valves? What could happen?

I’m thinking to clamp a metal plug in the line, and if the pump is off.... nothing will happen? The EGR valves are vacuum controlled I believe, but they’re not going to push air back down the hose and blow out the plug will they?

Someone please educate me here, thanks.

It appears I can just plug that hose until I get around to making blockoff plates for the valves. I believe there’s a check valve somewhere in the system that makes it one-way going out of the air pump.

Next question. Does anyone know if the SAI can be coded out easily? I really don’t need a CEL or another emissions monitor showing as “not ready”.

Thanks

Ooooh that’s cool thanks. I got it coded out by “a guy” last year, but I’m sure this will help someone down the line.

That is the reason. Actually I found on Drive2 ru an article where the guy shows a built in set of options specific to the car and shows on how to disable them.
So before I could see programmed options I had to use some setting to read them , after was able to program while engine running.

In for more info. A cleaner engine any would be nice too. If anyone can get details on the dimensions/shape of the SAI it would be nice.

nevermind that was simple

Yes, I used them to delete my SAI system.

You can see them in these pics if you look closely.
