Roof Rain Rails peeling, Need info.
All,
Need a little info here, the rain/guide rails on the roof seem to be peeling cleat coat on my car. I attached pictures for reference. Any help would be great!
1. Are they painted the body color or black?
2. What are the part numbers of these things?
3. Should I replace or just repaint (color)?

Pretty sure that they were originally painted to match the car. It looks like someone just put black vinyl tape over them. You can see the original magnatite under the tape in the close up shot.

I'm not sure about that, all the other cars I've seen have glossy black. The texture underneath is kinda rough. The part is not listed as primed/paint-able part in the Mercedes parts catalog as well. I could be wrong though......

These are black by default on many 204s, clear coat on them is failing from being baked in the sun. Harsh cleaners can do it to. My only plan for when this happens is either remove and repaint, or replace with new

I have never seen them not be gloss black and the only part number is glad black not listed as paintable.

You’re going to do something either way. Try peeling the rest of the black off first and see if you can polish whatever is underneath (looks like factory paint match). That’s not what it looks like when the clear coat peels off.

Yea, I'm going to ask the body shop how much to sand and repaint. I found them for $128 & $123, so not too bad. I'll update once I find out from shop on price.

That's the factory finish on those pieces. If you do wrap it, if you don't sand it down first, the unevenness will show through the vinyl material. However, if you do wrap over the pealing finish, at least it'll hold everything together and prevent it from getting worse.

My car is Polar White with all gloss black trim (507) and the roof rails are gloss black so it matches pretty well - wish they painted the roof black on the sedan from the factory would then work great with the gloss black roof rails.

If you have a good high pressure washer you may be able to peel back the clear coat with the spray jet - it worked for me. On the other hand I wonder if a high pressure spray (I tend to only use mine for a foam cannon coating or up closer on the wheels) started the whole peeling drama.
