Breaking traction from stationary

Hey

ive had my 2010 saloon for about 6 months now, and I’m genuinely smitten with it.

One thing that just seems odd is my car’s apparent traction from a standing start, it seems ‘too good’.

If if I turn off the ESP, put it in S, and nail the gas pedal it will squeal and spin a little, but generally it just hooks up and go’s - in some ways it’s a perfect launch 🚀

I probably wouldn’t question it but I read a lot about people doing similar things and it resulting in uncontrollable wheel spin without them rolling in the pedal. So it seems odd my car acts so differently.

I’ve reset the ECU and TCU and that seems to have helped slightly, it certainly holds gears longer. And once up and moving the car pulls really well...

does anyone else ‘suffer’ 😂 from extreme grip?!

Cheers!
james

Hold ESP button to turn completely off, if you want to do a sweet little burnout hold the brakes lightly and put in manual and just stay around 3.5K spinning the tires

Yeah I’ve definitely had it turned off, I think. On my 2010 model it seems to have 3 settings;

1. All aids on
2. sport handling with ESP on
3. ESP off (like you mention, by holding it for 5 secs or so)

maybe it’s because the tyres have only done 1k or so.

but yeah I hear you about manual, that will be what I try next

I have the same issue... gotta use manual b/c even in sport mode it shifts into 2nd early and allows the tires to grab hold.

yeah it’s starting to make sense now! the traction won’t initially break until the revs hit their stride, and if that’s cut short I guess it kills it off. You can pull on the downshift and D1 it in auto and I think, that will hold for the full range.

I’ll run a few more experiments when I get a chance 🤓

You need to get on it so the computer learns you driving behavior. Drive it like you stole it and you won’t have a problem with transmission shifting early in from the 1 2 shift

You should also be able to press the left paddle shifter before starting. This will display D1 as the gear and not shift until it hits redline.

ah but this is where the issues lies! .... 40% of my driving is with the Mrs sat next to me 😒😀

resetting the ECU/TCU more frequently is a viable option though, when I did that it was noticeably more up for it

Burnout Level: UNLOCKED

Well, I gave holding the brakes lightly before planting it a chance today - and I certainly got the drama I was lacking

Interestingly this was just in S, rather than manual, and obv with the EPS off.

I do need to work on my modulation a little though, as coming off the brakes slowly the car was starting to snake a little too much for comfort, all good fun though.
