I decided to replace the head bolts on my E63 today. At 130,000 miles I found one lobe on each intake camshaft had started to wear the lifter. It was very minor, but enough to require replacement of the camshafts. The engine had a rattle on warm starts and I found both intake camshaft adjusters no longer holding their base position.
Along with the revised head bolts, I replaced all the lifters with the revised SLS buckets, all four camshafts, all four camshaft adjusters, and all of the associated seals.
I am real happy none of the bolts broke coming out. A couple of them were real crusty but the rest looked great.
I worked at a dealer for years and saw two M156 that broke headbolts. Two out of all the M156 equipped cars.
Cams eating through the lifter I see much more frequently and noisy adjusters. I think adjuster noise is the most common. All are very costly to fix though.

They sill work within spec to a certain point when noisy though.
Did you check your cams/lifters at all before now?
The adjuster will pass the Xentry test/actuation even when they wont hold their base position and rattle on start. When you turn the engine over, you will get no rotation from whichever cam had the failed adjuster.
Stock headbolts, stock internals, 130k on the motor, AND its supercharged??? I've gotta say that's either a well maintained engine or you're lucky. I'm @ 109k with stock headbolts, but as soon as i put my S/C on, I'm doing black series everything and forged internals.
Usually it is all of the intake lobes and they normally look quite a bit worse. I was surprised how minor it was. I did a client's car today with 82K and his intake and exhaust cams were all worn much much worse then my car at 130K.
No, I am not selling the new parts for $500. That is for all of the old parts.

Serious? Worn out parts? I'm going to go to the closest Mercedes dealer and ask if I can dumpster dive for scrap parts, I had no idea they were worth that much.
