Introduction and question; is a 507 for me?
Good evening! I am a male retired lawyer, 56 living in Mexico City and the current owner of a 2014 MB GLK 300 and a 2008 Porsche Boxster S with MT. Previously owned MBīs include a 2011 ML63, a 2004 ML350, 1994 E420 and a 2001 E320. I have begun to feel I need a change of my fun car and am considering selling the Porsche and purchasing a 2014 C63 507 sedan I will be taking a look at tomorrow. I believe it will be much more usable and enjoyable in Mexico than the Porsche. The car would not be tracked nor driven agressively nor modified/tuned in any way; I tend to be one of those persons who enjoy the car in part by trying to maintain it as close to perfection as posible and that includes somewhat careful mindful driving, which is not to say a 350 mile fast trip is out of the question. I have come to believe, based in my experience, that there is no perfect trouble free car; all of them have had some sort of "ticking bomb issue". The Porsche, the ML63 and a 2009 MBW X5 4.8 come to mind. I understand that the M156 in a 507 is in theory the most "revised", "perfected" or "corrected" iteration of the M156, but that three main issues remain uncorrected and present recurrent problens; lifters, camshafts, and camshafts adjusters. I understand this is caused by an oiling problem, specially in the intake (upper) camshafts. I also understand that the headblot issue was solved at mid 2011, but am unsure if this was really solved. My point is to ask if there is in fact a definitive solution to these issues which would make the engine in particular, and the car in general, a very reliable and durable car; one which I could believe might be a keeper for may years of reasonable trouble free enjoyment. Can/should the lifters camshafts and adjusters be changed for improved OEM or aftermarket parts to solve the problem? Should the headbolts de changed also (ARP)? Your experience and help will be very much appreciated!

Hello retired lawyer. If this is fact true The car would not be tracked nor driven agressively nor modified/tuned in any way, I cant see why youd enjoy this car. If you want to be stuck sucking smog in MC, youd be better off in a s-class. These are performance enthusiast cars. And outdated at that. They are fun as hell if you push them, but by your own admission thats not what you intend to do. Im confused.

I would say since you don't plan to track or modify the car, the 507 will be your best bet. It comes out of the box as hot as it can be (Black Series would be too much for a DD for most) and doesn't really need to be modded. It will put a smile on your face every day (except when it's on a flatbed). Two other things to fix would be to swap the plastic idler pulleys for billet ones to prevent failure and make sure the injectors stay fresh (either have them serviced or replaced). Keep on top of the maintenance, especially trans services (I'd recommend every 20k vice every 40k, my fluid was always black and burnt at 40k), and I don't see a reason why the car wouldn't last for many years to come. It may be outdated in terms of numbers, but in terms of driver enjoyment, it's ahead of many of today's cars. In Japan I now drive a 130 hp minivan that is killing my soul, and not a day goes by that I don't miss my C63 (almost as much as I miss my wife and daughter while on deployment haha). In 2 years when I return to the US I will be looking for a 507 or a CTS-V2 Wagon.

Get a 507
For the purpose of driving enjoyment, the 507 will fit the bill. Its not the fastest or most modern car, but for a commuter and weekend car, it has enough personality and presence that will make you smile every time you drive it. I say go for it!

2016 GTs, 2014 C63 AMG and 2014 C350 Sport (wife's car, she thinks it's an AMG - shhhhhh)
Buy ^^HIS^^ 507
I'd be all over it except for the fact that I am madly in love with my C63 which came with a full service contract until 2022 and hasn't given me a lick of trouble (knocks on wood).

Built 2008 G55 & one big 80 Series LandCruiser !
to the OP - I'd consider the 12' E63 as well given your M.O. bit longer wheelbase - debadged it wont attract much attention and it can be tuned easily to 700hp... much larger interior and less on the radar compared to the 507 ..... that said I traded my E63 in for the 507 as it had the lithe look I wanted and has a great power to weight ratio.....
not sure how safety factors in - but suspect the E63 has a significant edge there as well...
cheers

507 is a great car. It puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it.
Mine is a daily drive, and apart from tyres and fuel, there is no other expense.
I'm pretty sure that if you service the car properly, it should provide years of trouble free motoring.

Thanks to all for your replies! Given my local realities (rampant and ever increasing insecurity and the sad state of our roads in general) my DD is my now somewhat old GLK; not many people seem to notice it and it is adequately fast, comfortable and practical for my needs. This is for me an exercise focused on a weekend car. Although I love the Porsche, it is harder to enjoy, in part because it is a two seater. I would like for my 13 yr. old son to be able to invite a friend along whent we plan a weekend drive. I believe the 507 would fit the bill of being entretaining and fast. Unfortunately our laws do not allow for importation of a car from the US; that would make things much simpler given that less tan 30 507 sedans were sold in Mexico. The car I saw yesterday was in a sad state. Back to my point; I fear that if I go ahead I might regret it (again) and find myself not enjoying and driving the car, but obsessed with trying to keep it perfect. Given the nature of the known problem areas of the M156, that could get very tiring and very expensive.. What I would like to know from the experts/ more experienced owners is whether there are OEM improved or aftermarket parts that would definitively solve the lifters/camshafts/adjusters/headbolts issues, and in its case suggestions on reputable first class vendors/shops who colud sell ans install the parts. In theory changing upgrading the problem parts would afford me a relatively trouble free, lasting and enjoyable experience. Thanks for reading and for all the help!

As long as you get 2012+ the headbolts won't be an issue. As far as the lifters, camshafts, adjusters, I wouldn't worry about those. It is more of an annoyance to some who don't like the very small tick noise that occurs, and not really a issue to concern yourself with.
I do see that it is very tricky to import a car into the area you are at. You could always try to work with a dealer or local importer / 3rd party who might know some better ways or have some ties to that type of work. Not saying to do anything illegal of course lol.

Not the latest of technology but as a T Shirt I have says " Turbo's are god's way of telling you you need more cylinders!" There is no sub for cubic inches.
That said, having had a couple of the more modern cars the 507 is a much better built car and a pleasure to drive. Those who love to tune them, track then and race them are entitled to their view but if you want to have a great immaculate version of this street race car and just enjoy the hell out of driving it go for it. We all get our pleasures in different ways.

What Matt forget to tell you is that his immaculate and gorgeous 507 is for sale. I am publicly in love with his car. If I were you and you can ship to Mexico, you should take a look at it.
I'd be all over it except for the fact that I am madly in love with my C63 which came with a full service contract until 2022 and hasn't given me a lick of trouble (knocks on wood).

Thanks Rene. It really is in perfect shape- ive taken great care of it and the car has surely been babied lol
However, I personally would never daily a w204 c63, horrible on gas and not comfortable (my opinion) but this car is hands down the most fun car I have ever owned so DO IT!!
