Comand Unit Screws

Hi all,

I’m looking for the part number of the two screws that hold the Comand HDD unit/CD player into the dash; the two torx head ones that sit vertically and lock it into place which can be seen once you remove the central air vent. I had my unit out recently to rid a rattle and I damaged a head on one, and since I plan on going back there for Car Play, I want to replace.

I went to my dealer but they are useless. Can anyone help me at all? This is last resort of course, after searching.

Probably your best bet is just going to a screw/fastener store and finding one with the right length threading and pitch

Did you ever figure this out? I'm in the same boat. I am also looking for the two T20 screws that screw into the gauge cover that mount the screen to the dash.

Hey man.

Actually no, I never figured it out. You know what, guys like you are the reason for forums, thank you for finding them. It was a job I just put on hold but I'll get back on it now.

Appreciate that. I'm not entirely sure how helpful the links I sent you will be, but you can at least google the size and see what you can come up with. Another possibility is messaging salvage dealers on eBay or local junk yards and asking if they have those screws available that they can remove and send out to you, or if they're local, removing yourself. I'm not sure if you tried this at all, but if you do find a suitable replacement, use a torx bit and a ratchet - the angle is too awkward for a torx screwdriver and will strip the head.

You could even find the locking mechanism and email the company to see if the screws come with that. This is for a 2012 C250 (my car) but might fit yours as well:

I tried the salvage guys last time and they are useless or too far away. Now I know it's an M4 screw, I can probably just pick up an M4X25mm or 20mm and it should work, this time with a Philips head. I know about the stripping only too real, that's what I did and want to get it out in case it strips further and I can never get back there again.

Yeah, it's actually a little frustrating how these fasteners/pieces of hardware are so hard to find. The MB dealer I went to was useless and gave me a couple screws that weren't the right fit at all. Then, they proceeded to tell me that I have to order a whole new radio and locking mechanism because those screws "aren't meant to be removed". Worst case is, if it strips too much, to use a tap/dye to get it out, or locking pliers. You'd be able to grind down two sides of the screw and use the locking pliers to twist out. I hope I was able to help in some capacity.

Update: I found these parts online from a MB dealer:

Hope this helps. I'd call up your local dealer and they should be able to order that.

Reviving this thread: I lost the 2 locking mechanism brackets as I pulled the screws out too much on my 2016 E550 cabrio. I ordered 1 pair (Link) but I have NO idea how to install it, as it seems impossible to put it back in place from the opening where the COMAND unit was. Anyone knows how to put them back in place? Do I have to remove other parts first?

Thanks!

Yes, please take the other screw and go to the dealership and they will help you out with the same one. I have a extra one. If you want please send the details and I will send you for free. Email me. Good luck.

Hi. Did the locking mechanisms fall down out of reach? If so, did you work out how to get them back at all or what to dismantle to get at them?

Should fall down to remove the head unit. So no worries. When you put the screw and tight the small piece (lock) will go up and lock the head unit. Just put the screw and keep tightening, the screw end will automatically connect to the lock.

I took the screw out and the mechanism fell down to where I can’t see it unfortunately. I wondered if you managed to retrieve the locking mechanism?

I don’t think you understand. The mechanism that the screw screws into dropped out of sight. Is that what happened to you? If so, how did you get it back?

Nope! Couldn’t find a way of getting them back. I’ve just put the head unit in without securing it. The trim around the air vents does secure it a bit and if you didn’t already know, you would never suspect.

Jonny, did you manage to resolve this issue. I have the same problem.
Locking plates fell when I loosened the screws.

Seb, did you manage to resolve the fitting of the locking mechanism for the head unit.
Mine fell when I unscrewed the unit.
Any info on retrieving or fitting back would be greatly appreciated
