General update:
I had a couple of recommendations which had us do: Warm up, drive 43 for 3 min, drive 48-54 for 3 mins then park in D for 3 min. We did this twice last night and a slight variance of that one the day before (bmw cycle). Nothing has changed from the day we got the car from the smog dude except EVAP. Just driving was my actual MB service recommendation (no real help). Almost willing to disconnect battery and start fresh... Maybe Sunday if nothing changes.
Post a screen shot of your monitors in the app

This is what I get as of noon PST. We did another recommended cycle this morning and got no love. Since I have nothing to lose at this point I might just pull the battery overnight and start fresh one more time. I did get some answer from the local German shop on the "trouble with re-flash". They mentioned that the ECM (ECU same thing?) had a memory fault when they went to re-flash. He said it most likely was damaged when somebody loaded a tune. And that is your local update.. super sad.. this Merc is draining my will to live.. boo My hot rod is turning out to be a pita as I guess most hot rods are. lol

What tune is on your car and how did the shop flash stock software on the ECU?

Your evap has passed and your cats are still red so I'm willing to bet your not stock tune.

The previous owner placed a tune on the car most likely because the smog dude mentioned that those two monitors wouldn't even show up before (as in bypassed by tune). I have no idea what it was. It is a local German auto shop that re-flashed the ecu. That is all I know.
The German shop recommended a basic cycle of 2min warm, 15-20 min straight below 60mph and below 3k rpm, before I panic.

You're on California the mecha of cars and tuning shops. I'd highly suggest finding a different shop that knows what they are talking about and can actually flash it back to stock, put a tune on it that will keep the emissions monitors on. Or see if the dealership will.

does that shop flash aftermarket tunes? i'm not even sure the dealership could flash a tune entirely back to stock. they'd probably ask that you buy a new computer.

^^ I am waiting for an estimate on time on money to re-flash ecu at the MB dealer. I am not sure I trust the local german shop. I find in my county most shops try and hose people if you are not a friend of the shop.

Dint even bother it will be expensive. I reccomend getting an oe tuning handheld and they will give you a factory stock file and even there stage 1 file will pass all monitors.

It will be alot cheaper.

I agree... maybe even contact Jerry at Eurocharge to confirm first. When they send you a handheld, you sync basically only you VIN to the handheld and they can send you a stick and v7 tune.

then... in the future, you can flash back and forth to pass emissions each time you need to. Do so a few weeks before just to make sure you are ready.

I am (obviously) new to this. You are recommending purchasing a device to self tune the car with a file provided by an aftermarket tuner? This allow all monitors to be read for Cali smog? Right now I don't care about the performance of the car (450hp not enough...lol), I just need it to pass smog so I can register it in my home state. Later I may want to mess with it, but for now I need all monitors to work.

This sounds like a great option. I will try and contact Jerry today. Thanks!

Something interesting happened today. In the midst of my preparations for hari kiri, I disconnected the negative battery cable to give my car the middle finger. 1hr later I reconnected the battery in hopes that I reset all the monitors. Everything stayed the same. The board must have an internal battery (I guess). I had turned on the lights to make sure I drained the power down as well.
The only thing that changed (and maybe a good sign) is that my HH-OBD2 scanner actually recognized the VIN. I had not seen this before since using the scanner....
Sooooo I am wondering if I maybe reset enough of the board for it to recognize my monitor issues. I won't be driving until tomorrow, but my fingers are crossed.

Disconnecting the battery won't magically enable your OBDII scanner to read the VIN. Was your ignition in the on position when you connected the scanner? You may have been doing something wrong previously.

Your car is likely still tuned and the secondary O2's are disabled. You need to get that sorted if you want to set all the readiness monitors.

I have been monitoring every day for the last 2 weeks and no VIN. Once I checked after only removing battery, I have a VIN. There is no other explanation. If the key is in 1st postion, my monitors are fine, but in the 2nd position (drive) is where I have been monitoring my progress because that is where the car's monitors show bad, so I haven't been doing anything wrong, the VIN just happened to show up after I disconnected battery. The monitors are still bad, but the fact that the VIN showed up was interesting.

It just flashes as shown in early post picture. But I am wondering if I lost all my "driving" info on those monitors. Its all a crap shoot. I am betting the local German shop jacked **** up. I made an appointment this Friday with my closest MB dealer for an official look into my ECU. Cheaper and hopefully more precise on the actual issue.

The dealer will not be cheap and push a new ECU on you. Just order an 800 dollar tune with a handheld programmer and that way you will get a base file for your car to flash stock.

That was one of the questions I was going to ask for both Eurocharged and Renntech. My base OE file seems corrupted so I wanted to know if they provide an OE or do they rely on the car to still have it?

I am near sure a base tune comes with the tune, since you only send them a VIN number sync with the handheld.
Jerry (Eurocharged) has always answered my questions within hours.

Not sure who answered, but I talked to Eurocharged and they mentioned upon request you can have v1 tune run monitors (or at least appear to run all?). Purchase the HHT or send in the ECU. I could then tune v7 for most performance later with a little more cash. And obviously flash back and forth for Cali smog. $1500 essentially. On the fence. I think my ECU was compromised by previous owner so I am really just crossing fingers and going with a choice by Friday.

well if you will tune it eventually, you can try that option first. Otherwise you’ll get soaked by the dealer first, regardless, then buy the tune eventually anyway.

Took the plunge to have a buddy who has a shop replace the ECU fully (~$450) and O2 sensors are now recognized and rear two seem to be shot. Replacing those and driving this weekend to hopefully clear them!

You got a new ECU for 450? They are going for 1500 used on ebay and you need the dealer to code it to your car. You cant just swap in a used ECU in our cars

$450 dang..new? I think I am looking at roughly $1500 + labor..Merc labor..lol
My wife dug up info on cleaning the MAF sensor and intake to help get the O2s to read properly and regain ready status. Old wives tale?

I'm not exactly sure where he got it from but he is an ex-mercedes tech and did mention using some diagnostic tools. Frankly he was able to tell me 2 rear O2 sensors were bad as opposed to my local MB dealership who said the ECU was fine and that I should replace all O2 sensors for $2500. Will report back with results

Episode 4: A new hope...
Took the car to dealer to re-flash (properly?) back to original. The tech explained that the car has the proper soft ware and was communicating but did need some coding (?) that might help the monitors ready up. They did not see any reason to change the ECU at this time. We will be doing drive cycles this week and keeping our fingers crossed that the monitors ready up. We had completed nearly 300 miles last time with no effect.

Any news there whale63?
