High oil temp

My oil temp started climbing this afternoon, stuck for 15 minutes in 5-10 mph bumper-to-bumper traffic on a 70°F day, and eventually reached 239°F before traffic finally broke up. I don't think I've ever seen oil temp that high in normal driving. Happily, it dropped back down to 220 pretty quickly once traffic opened up, but I was starting to worry. Is this kinda oil temperature normal in traffic like that? Don't we have a fan for the oil cooler that's supposed to help is a situation like this?

We do have a fan on the oil cooler. Should maybe get it checked out.

Are you talking Celsius as 139C and 120C for oil temps? Otherwise those temps are really low for Fahrenheit. My normal cruising temp maxes out at 106C so I think 120C is way too high for normal driving temps. If you mean 220F for normal driving temps then that is fine and 239F is not out of line either in stop and go traffic. 139C is 282F and that is limp mode temperature or close to it. Since you are it Texas, I assume your readings are in Fahrenheit and you have dropped 100 from your readings meaning temps of 239F and 220F.

Yeah, everything he said. 120/139 are about 100 degrees lower than my numbers in Fahrenheit... I run at about 215-220F, but have gotten to 240F while pushing it, and have gotten to 260F before I start getting worried. I hear that removing and cleaning the oil cooler, or running SeaFoam or another engine flush through your oil before changing it can really make a difference.
I’m actually going to be running my first engine flush tomorrow before switching from Mobil1 to LiquiMoly. I’ll let you know if that makes any difference in my operating temps.

I'm in Florida and my oil temp is regularly 220+ F. I think the highest I've seen it is 245F. The fan seems to start blowing around 230-235F from my experience.

Most modern cars run in the 210F-220F range for oil temps and anything under 240F is nothing to worry about - if you are above 250F then it is getting a bit hot, but car won't go into limp mode until 278F I think, so that is when Mercedes thinks it is getting unsafe.

Temps over 280°f on the track many times with ambient temp as 104°f... and NO Limps mode.

As everyone else said, normal. I've seen about that around this time of year here in GA, and around 245°F in the summer in traffic. Have tipped 280°F+ in the mountains no problem. I do pop the hood a little if I stop for a smoke but that's probably overkill and of marginal benefit tho tbh.

I thought all c63 m156 cars with a factory ecu hit limp mode in the 270s regarding oil temp..
Any idea why yours doesnt?
I track mine in high ambient temps too but not 104 yet and no oil temps over 260 yet. Thx

The oil temp display either isn’t accurate or lags a bit or both. Plus the engine continues to heat further even after limp mode hits, before it drops. I’ve seen oil temp as high as 286F on track prior to installing the 44O kit. Now I max out at 260F.
