Esl failure 2011 - 76k miles- need help to ID OBD device
Hello AMG Experts
I got the ESL failure where the car wont start intermittently.
It appears the esl motor is going but the grinding noise when it does unlock.
fear of getting stuck on the road I started the process to remove steering column as i was able to disconnect battery with esl lock open. While removing the lower dash cover i found this device connected to OBD port and have no clue what is it. Bought car preowned fy
would anyone know what this device does?
Besides this strange device. I am trying to remove tge esl without taking the airbag and wheel out. Wish me luck. Worst case I pull everything out and hopefully can reinstall without drama and save crazy dealer repair cost.

Taking the wheel and airbag out gives you a lot more room to undo the 4 steering column bolts, it’s only another 5-10 mins.
I tried to remove my ESL without removing the wheel and airbag, for about 2 hours and ending up removing them in the end.

If the ESL is not locked you can remove it without removing the column or steering wheel.

I did mine recently, see from post #184

Thank you, actually got it out esl without removing steering or air bag, just loosed column and wiggled it out. Not sure how to get these pins out to open the box without that special tool.

Did you order the replacement part yet? Its a TRP theft relevant part that gets vin coded. You'll basically need all the documentation to prove ownership and If they follow the rules like they are supposed to.... they will want to see the vehicle in person. So you may want to get that handled before you have to get the car trailered or towed in to prove you're in possession of it.
nvm: I guess you're going to try and replace the internal motor. Good luck, those things are *******s.
