I take mine to the dealer, but I also know the mechanics that work there and they have plenty of training and experience with the M156 and other AMG motors. Most Indy shops around me are almost as expensive and don't give me the benefits of a loaner, etc.

I think that image is from his claim and that is his auto insurance deductible. Could be wrong though. Looks like whoever it's from already denied the engine replacement.

Engine is ****ed, will give you a premium case of beer for it...

Seriously though, that's the dowel pin clanging on the plate in one or both of the 2 adjusters that wasn't replaced.

100% camshaft adjusters.

The problem is not the adjusters in general, but only the plates and pins that are in there. These wear out. If you buy new adjusters from Mercedes, sooner or later they will break again. For this purpose there is a repair kit made of hardened material. So they will never break again.

You only changed two adjusters and now one of the other two is making noise.

A adjuster at Mercedes costs $725 and sooner or later it breaks down again.

The repair kit costs $1,600 for all four and you'll never have any problems again.

Good info, and that aligns with what was discussed in that video posted ITT. Are you able to get the repair kit installed & replaced through MB without having to purchase the adjusters themselves? Seems like this repair should be more widely discussed. I feel like I'm starting up a diesel truck at times with this noise...

Part #'s for the repair kit?

Apparently these were available on eBay a long while back but have not been able to find them since I've owned my C63.

Yesterday I rebuilt all of my CA's with a plate and pin kit from 63Motorsports in Canada and am very happy.
Price was cheaper than the kit above plus they have delved deeply into the hardness values of plates verses pins to find the best medium to use in the plates.
Only time and mileage will tell but $880 for a kit (4 plates & 4 pins) is far less than $1000+ each for complete CA's from Stealerships.
OEM CA's seem to wear out at all different rates which makes you wonder about quality control considering its only the base plate that wears.

Greetings.

The C63 is on my shortlist but some of these issues concern me having owned an Audi S4 B6 with the 4.2 V8 and timing issues. In fact that startup rattle in the video above sounds identical to the one I used to hear.

I watched this video which documents the major faults and makes me wonder if I'd be stepping into the same problems again. When I bought the S4 the timing issue wasn't known about but it cost me over £6000 because 22 of the 40 valves got bent.

For the S4 Audi decided to put a V8 in an A4 engine bay. What they had wouldn't fit so they built a smaller engine for the purpose - it used timing chains to save space but they had to put them around the back to fit peripherals around the front. The theory was that the timing system would last the life of the engine and would never need servicing. In reality though the oil didn't stay in the head to pressurise the tensioners which, in turn, slap the guides which were made from a substandard material (which presumably they knew as they were revised for the B7 S4 and upgraded completely for the B7 RS4).

They also had a similar issue with the cam adjusters and pins that wallowed out the lollipop shape they sat in.
