Angry Loud chatter/ticking sound Only on a Cold Start

Hello all,

I have had this car for a little over 2 years, and out of the blue, this sound started happening. I have had MB look at it, they replaced the adjusters, but the sound is back. Any ideas what this is?

MB is saying that the motor needs to be replaced after replacing one side of the adjusters. Which I feel is a little excessive.

I've got the same sound and it can be pretty loud at certain times... I haven't been able to find the fix either.

So replacing the adjusters didn’t alleviate anything? That’s the only fix I’ve read, but have read others replacing as well and not rectifying the noise. It only lasts for 1-3 seconds, correct?

~1 out of every 10 cold Starts, I’ll experience the same. It’s only for 0-1 seconds at cold start and It never happens when I rev or drive after. Curious if this should be looked into as well. I’ve read into it and from what I gathered there are some that just live with it, others have fixed cam adjusters only to find it didn’t fix anything.

It sounds like your Cam Adjusters.
A lot of M156's start like that sometimes.

No, nothing. I sounds like a timing chain rattle. How MB doesn't know what is causing it is beyond me.

A master at MB was telling me it takes a few seconds for oil pressure to build up, which leaves the chain lose on cold starts. MB said next step is to replace the motor... like my car only has 70k miles on it.

See the sound in a lot of those videos are continuous sounds. Mine only happens with in the first 1-2 seconds of start and then nothing. Car drives normal and everything.

That's what I told him. After the adjusters, they just have no idea what to do next, its like they have never seen this motor before.

Both sides are brand new -

A rock fell out of a construction truck i was behind, and I couldn't slow down in time. Bent the exhaust up which is why you see the exhaust parts on there as well.

You have only replaced 2 out of the 4 Cam adjusters.
They most likely only replaced the inlet ones since it is the inlet camshafts and lifters that have the most wear problem.
Watch this video from the 31minute mark about Cam Adjusters.
Tasos probably knows more about the M156 than most stealership master techs.

Like Cwagon said, they only replace 2 of the 4 adjusters, so could still be an adjuster for sure, not a lot of part numbers on that work order, hopefully the washer screw line includes the diamond washers and new bolts to hold the cam adjusters on as they are single use. Also seems they didn't replace any seals for the cam covers or cam adjuster covers according to that.

Seems they are pretty light on smarts if they are saying it needs an engine cause they are too dumb to figure out a problem especially since they only replace half the cam adjusters which is one probable source of the noise.

Could also be the solenoids on the adjusters. There are 4 as well.

OP, I'll take a video of mine and post it. I believe you and I are chasing the same issue... The fact that the dealer told you the only other option was to replace the motor is comical at best. I would start looking for another shop.

Yea man same thing happened to my brothers e350. He went in for a valve tic and the dealership said you need a new engine lol he had a nasty loaner for a month and got a brand new engine.

I then went to same dealership and they told me my car was fine and normal so if you have a dealership saying new engine JUMP on that.

Willing to bet it is a bad camshaft adjuster. I replaced those F***ers and they still rattle once every 3 or 4 months. I say drive & enjoy the car, until it starts throwing a CEL or if the noise occurs during every startup.

Good luck.

I may have missed it, but I don't see where the OP said that MB would cover it under warranty. With 70K miles, I doubt they would foot the bill.
